OK, who hasn't heard of Coventry Climax? I know they're race car engine makers but the company history is a fascinating insight into the working psyche of a successful engine maker.

Books like this fascinate me and the subject is, if a bit technical, far from boring - at least that's what I found.

Author Des Hammill has patiently researched his subject and admitted early on that prior to delving deep into Coventry Climax, he's accepted the 'common knowledge' about the company and its products as being correct.

There are details of engine development, the characters involved in all aspects of the company and the racing world, references to motorcycles and the emerging world of the professional race team as opposed to the gentleman's sport.

Coventry Climax Racing Engines has a wealth of history crammed into the 192 pages of this hardback 9in x 6in book. Is it worth the �16.99 from Veloce Publishers? I think so, but then again I enjoy a load of such technical books.

Des Hammill is a professional engineer with huge experience of building successful and reliable racing engines and solving the problems associated with all aspects of high performance applications. Des has written many of Veloce's SpeedPro series books.

Engine tech lovers, buy this book!

Exactly what I was hoping for, and more - this book is targeted at a fairly specific type of enthusiast and absolutely nails it with lots of technical details (including many that surprised me), fascinating anecdotes, dyno charts, excellent, informative photos (none of which are wasted, btw), and clear, unambiguous writing. If you are "into" engines at the nuts-and-bolts level you will love this book - I literally could not put it down. However... if you interested in the cars the CC engines were fitted to or their race histories, look elsewhere.

Dry, too dry even for this die-hard tech head. It's pretty much a straight up reference book. You are told the names of the gents in the machinist shops at least if you ever wondered who ran the mill and the lathes.

Book I received was missing page 179,180. Other than that odd fact, it's okay. It provides a good overview of concepts related to internal controls and managerial accounting from an IT perspective. However, it spends too much time on the specifics of SQL and Microsoft Access databases. A significant portion of the book contains references and information concerning those topics, but not enough detail to learn how to use them. It seemed pointless. Either include enough information to allow readers to start to use those tools, or limit the information to just an overview of what Access and SQL do.

Heartstopping!

I was so enthralled with this book, some spots had me laughing while others had me crying my eyes out.

Lucy and Henry wasted so much time being in love with each other but not having the courage to say it to each other.

Thank goodness Henry came to his senses and ran after her. Beautiful love story, I am very happy they finally got married.

Elizabeth this was one fantastic book, thanks for sharing it with us readers.

A Lot of Misunderstandings

This story is centered around the building of the railroad as it goes across the West. The West is still pretty much the Wild, Wild West. Henry Stevens is General Manager for the Railroad; a man who will do whatever it takes to get the job done. But he's made enemies and someone has come to investigate him. That's when Lucy Forbes, enters the picture with her father, who is the one sent to investigate Henry's ways. Lucy is young, beautiful, and smart. There is an attraction building between Henry and Lucy. But Henry is used to being in control, is very ambitious, used to moving people around like chess pieces and Lucy longs for freedom adventure. Sounds like the Wild West isn't going to be the only challenge.
It took awhile to get into the people and the situations in the story. As the story went along, I began to see that Henry had a whole lot more on his plate than it seemed at first. Both personally and professionally. He is well written as a forceful, often arrogant man, who seemed to think he knows best in all situations. But there are glimpses into this man's personality; of carefully hidden emotions of caring for others. The railroad workers call him, "The Chief", and recognize the toughness and authority he carries. Lucy was someone who at times, I wanted to smack at first. Probably because she often went off making judgements without the evidence at first. I also saw in the story that she had reasons to be so mistrustful and protective of her father and his position. An accurate review title would be, " A Lot of Misunderstandings". There are quite a few mysteries going on, so that probably made the story seem to go a bit slower, but a little after half way, it really began to gather steam. Sure Henry and Lucy were still fighting each other and still trying to get what they wanted without risking too much but then the other parts of the story began to come together. Other people of interest were Henry's sister, Claire, Billy (an orphan boy) and the Garrity, the Sheriff. While I liked the story, I don't think it was one of my favorites so far.
By the way, I did really like the cover picture for this eBook.

Captivating, entertaining & oh-so STEAMY! Treat yourself to a smart and sexy read.

After truly enjoying Kate's Outlaw and Her Bodyguard, I eagerly awaited the 3rd installment of Steam! Romance and Rails. Happily, E.E. Burke more than met my expectations with A Dangerous Passion. She transports us to the American frontier to join those seeking new lives in the west after the Civil War.
Lucy and Henry are imperfect people, who, if they can just get out of their own way, could be perfect for each other.
Henry Stevens is strong, courageous, self-taught and ambitious to a fault. He's willing to do just about anything to make the Katy railroad a success. He won't let anyone thwart his plans, especially some railroad inspector from Boston or the man's quick-witted, sassy and sexy daughter. Henry immediately begins scheming how to keep his job, fob off the inspector, and win the girl.
Lucy Forbes believes moving to Parsons, KS will be the new start she and her father need. Sight unseen, Lucy has declared Henry a scoundrel and deserves to be fired. With Henry out of the way, her father can regain his high-standing in the railroad and she can pursue her writing career. However, Lucy's preconceived ideas are shaken when she discovers Henry, while driven, is also heroic, kind, deliciously attractive and impossible to resist.
E.E. Burke"s well-researched historical setting never gets in the way of the story telling. A Dangerous Passion is a character-driven book filled with action, mystery, laughter, tears and (best of all) steamy romance. Enjoy!

A Different View

The mid 1600’s were not a particularly good time to be in England. There were the civil wars, and various other wars between Catholics and Protestants (among others). A lot of the royal family, kings and wives were executed. The great fire of London took place. Dr. Greenberg has analyzed this time not from a historical point of view, but from an analysis of plays, other writings and paintings from and about the time. She analyzes works of Shakespeare, Milton, Massinger and many other writers to illustrate how the literature changed to match changes at the base level of society. There were arguments about the divine power of kings culminating in the execution of Charles I. Cromwell was attempting to change the very structure of English government.

Dr. Greenberg includes eleven illustrations from paintings of the period. Unfortunately including the paintings in black and white in a regular 6"x9" book means that they are reduced in size to make them difficult to see the critical points she is discussing. To better see what she is discussing I went to the web to find better images.

All in all, this book presents an original view of life at the time.

A very short introduction indeed

Very crisp, clear and informative. Just what I needed, with useful suggestions for further reading, but as the price reflects, it's a very short text. At least it introduces Said, Fanon, Spivak, and a few other major figures in readable fashion. Would have loved to have more.

About the Author
Dr. Troy Hicks (@hickstro) is a professor of Literacy and Technology at Central Michigan University and focuses his work on the teaching of writing, literacy and technology, and teacher education and professional development. A former middle school teacher, he collaborates with K - 12 colleagues and explores how they implement newer literacies in their classrooms. Hicks directs CMU's Chippewa River Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project, and he frequently conducts professional development workshops related to writing and technology. Hicks is author of the Heinemann titles Crafting Digital Writing (2013) and The Digital Writing Workshop (2009), as well as a co-author of Because Digital Writing Matters (Jossey-Bass, 2010) and Create, Compose, Connect! (Routledge/Eye on Education, 2014). He blogs at Digital Writing, Digital Teaching. In March 2011, Hicks was honored with CMU's Provost's Award for junior faculty who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in research and creative activity. Insightful Inquiry into Learning

Troy Hicks again brings his focus to the world of digital literacy, and the result is both an insider's look at how students are composing with multimodal tools, and how teachers can bring digital possibilities into the classroom. What's refreshing here is that Hicks takes an outside view of the work, offering analytical insights into the composing practices that appears to be going on with various projects, and then expanding those ideas into connections to literacy. This book is a fantastic resource that goes beyond the sharing of student work. It provides a model for how to look at the digital compositions of students, and make sense of the choices they are making. By doing so, teachers can then better guide the compositional practices of learners.

Amazing guide for Digital Writing

If you are a classroom teacher interested in using more digital writing in your class or extending your use, this book is probably for you. Mr. Hicks does an amazing job explaining how traditional elements of writing are manifest differently in digital formats. He keeps the focus on solid writing instruction, but explains clearly how digital texts have different features, a different form. He covers websites, blogs, wikis, audio, video and presentations. He's really a teacher's teacher, rather than a fool trying to convince you that "digital writing is where it's at!" (which is too much of what we see these days) He clearly thinks writing is where it's at, and then here's how you can teach writing effectively in digital formats.

Additionally, he makes clear connections to the Common Core, in case you need to justify why all your students are writing a blog this year. He clearly uses a lot of the tools he suggests.

His resources and suggestions are amazing and useful. His student examples are (mostly) inspiring.

Rich Furman is strong in his description of the historical and cultural contexts (e.g., concepts of masculinity, global perspectives) of men's issues and the assessment of men's issues in practice. About the Author

Rich Furman, MSW, Ph.D., is associate professor and director of social work at the University of Washington, Tacoma. He is the author of more than 100 books, articles, and book chapters. His most recent books are Social Work Practice with Latinos: Key Issues and Emerging Themes, Navigating Human Service Organizations, and Group Work: An Experimental Approach.
