THE book to recommend to anyone who wants to better understand how Jazz Music developed!

This is an excellent overview of "the making of jazz." I used it when I was teaching Jazz History at Johns Hopkins Evening College years ago, and again at the Peabody Institute. I enjoyed one of the reviews that Amazon singled out-- the positive one! The writer hit all the right notes. The selected negative review was somewhat shallow and actually faulted Collier for not mentioning Eric Alexander (whom Collier would probably never have mentioned with any weight had he written two more volumes.) The work finds jazz as Afro-centric music, which it certainly is in my opinion. An example of his discerning process is calling Artie Shaw a great clarinetist who played jazz (rather than a great jazzman who played clarinet). If the book is flawed I think it is in the psycho-babble used in analyzing the actual player himself, rather than confining analysis to the musician and his music. A little is fine, but a little goes a long way. Collier gives a perfect timeline, and leaves no important player out. He gives proper attention where attention is due, and calls it like he sees it.. and hears it. An honest appraisal by a discerning musical historian and wonderful music-lover.

In spite of being from 1978, it still stands as the best book on Jazz history. Collier is balanced, was a musician himself and, last but not least, is an apt researcher.

Gloriously enthralling

I could not put his book down. It delivers a full spectrum panoramic, technicolor presentation. I welcomed very much the inside scope on musicians personal life's, dysfunction and creative process. (These patterns do not apply to Jazzers only, by the way.)can make you understand human nature, and also the pain make art can involve... A very moving, hugely informative, intimate yet far reaching work. It made me hear the music better as well. I will read it again.

The book presents a vision of evangelism for the church today that is best expressed on page 33 – “The goal of evangelism is to ground, establish, institute, and train people in the reality of God’s rule”. It is a vision that picks up the strength of Jonathan Edward’s thoughts on evangelism and Charles Finney’s actions in the same (13).
I appreciate Abraham’s goal. It is nicely worded, especially when using the word “reality”. Because God is presently working and moving, we just have to have eyes to see and ears to hear what the Spirit is saying. According to Abraham the Spirit moving is the key to it all (14). If we do not listen or see well enough to keep in step with the Spirit we will not experience the fullness of the kingdom. If we cannot see ourselves as witnesses and proclaimers of Christ’s reign then we will not have the proper motivation to take action. Being a proper witness, as Abraham argues must include being kind to neighbors, engaging in acts of justice, and helping widows and orphans. This means that everyone is an evangelist (24).

Abraham rightly says that mere proclaiming and doing acts of mercy are insufficient to be proclaiming the kingdom. Abraham does offer justification for giving the goal of evangelism as God’s rule but the book is lacking in Scripture references and a hashing through some solid examples. It tends to run over very quickly some highlights that the early church practiced. The problem with this is that with this type of approach one can justify a variety of practices that the church should do now based on their quick scan of the Bible. In many ways this book has been surpassed by N.T. Wright’s book “Simply Jesus”. Wright offers a more thorough look into what is going on in Scripture. As an example on page 34, Abraham says that the church’s first task is to “celebrate and worship”. He offers no justification why this might be. It would seem just as proper maybe that our first goal should be to act as vice regents in this world for him. In the book After You Believe by N.T. Wright we find a justification as to why celebrating might be warranted. Wright gives his own translation of Phil. 4:4,5 on page 227, “Celebrate in the Lord always! I’ll say it again. Celebrate! The Lord is right here!...” Philippians 3 says that celebrating being a part of the Lord’s entourage is a safeguard against discouragement and trouble with others. It is a focus on the grace poured out on us to bring us into the kingdom that will dissipate any differences we might have with others. As an analogy it is what Americans should be doing every day as they compare their rights, privileges, and living conditions as American citizens to other countries.

So Abraham is right that being grateful is what we should do first, but he was not convincing enough.

In good Wesleyan fashion Abraham argues we should not preach this message the same to everyone, but we need long and short versions of it (40). He wisely distinguishes what has happened in the past with certain revivals as coming to those already churched, to today where Bible literacy and church attendance is declining in America. To those with church background we need to tweak our message from those who have hardly any background. Oddly though Abraham sees the gospel message that we proclaim as intrinsically attractive as it stands (50). This is antithetical to Scripture’s revelation of how the gospel is seen. To Jews it is highly offensive that someone crucified would be a savior and king, and to the Greeks it is pure nonsense that one person could take on everyone’s guilt and become king by being a servant. What Abraham should have noted at this point is that this then is where the Spirit comes in to play. He chose what is foolish to shame the wise. He gives gifts to the lower ranking in the church to balance out the church. There is so much grace given to us, that we rightly respond with faith, but we must realize that the mystery of God is what ultimately is the hook. Christians should always be celebrating as being adopted because the way it was done is beyond comprehension as well as the future benefits that no one can wrap their heads around it. So no one is going to be satisfied with the proclamation but for those who seek the truth it will set them free.

Later on in the book Abraham advises pastors should preach evangelistic sermons, hold revivals, and give ample time for testimonies as part of the evangelism package. I agree, but I want to say something about revival services that Abraham should have mentioned. The most successful services are ones that require sacrifice on the part of those who show up. The Great Awakening displayed such sacrifice. People traveled up to 2 days to show up to a meeting! If we make it so easy for someone to show up to a revival service with food and daycare and short messages we are not requiring what Jesus did of his hearers. He gave them a taste of a message but wanted them to pursue him further to inquire as to the meaning of what he said. The message might not be intrinsically attractive from a human perspective but it does hold power to persuade form the Spirit. So we give our message and do not necessarily have a prepared sinner’s prayer ready to go. More importantly we have love and care ready to go, when someone shows up. It is true after all that in many ways someone who converts is like a newborn and needs care (74).

I am glad that Abraham continues to harp on the reign of Christ being most important. He strengthens this thesis by stating that many churches will use the Bible as the standard, and he wisely notes that this uplifting of the Bible over everything else is a modern invention in reaction to the Catholic church (77). I am also glad he fully accepts the gifts of the Spirit as being in operation today (80). However I do not agree that the reason why we in America do not see it is because of our skepticism. I grew up in a church that was anything but skeptical, probably too far the other direction. I would argue it has to do with two different things. 1. More gifts will be manifested in the beginning stages of the gospel proclamation 2. Unity with each other is the key to the Spirit’s moving in our midst rather than skepticism which Abraham never proves exists. Disunity is obviously a huge problem as we see just by the number of denominations. Some were forced to leave but others chose disunity over minor differences, which is a practice that should be abhorred.
Lastly, and I will continue to harp on this but he lastly mentions disciplines of prayer, fasting, scripture study, and Eucharist attendance as fundamental means of grace over all others. He never offers justification much like the rest of the book. I agree that a couple of these are fundamental activities though I fail to see how fasting is. In any event again it is against the doctrine of prevenient grace to believe in what is called the “means of grace”. Prevenient grace states that anything can be used as a grace bearer. IN fact even something meant to be disastrous for us from the devil himself can result in grace being evident. It is going down the road of legalism to suggest that God uses certain channels regularly as means of grace. I even cringe every time I suggest to couples that communication is key to a happy marriage. They already know that it is. What helps more is that there is guidance we can give to couples that will enhance their communication skills. So prayer is not a means of grace, but helping someone frame their prayers via using the Lord’s Prayer is helpful. But one must be careful. Lectio Divina has been touted as the best way to meditate on Scripture but in my estimation it is inadequate and leads one to believe that individual words are without error in Scripture.

So yes I agree with Abraham that we cannot just abandon someone to life after introducing them to the proper Gospel message but we must not give them teaching that will send them back to carrying heavy burdens. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.

Categorically Unequal is striking both for its theoretical originality and for the breadth of topics it covers. Massey argues that social inequalities arise from the universal human tendency to place others into social categories. In America, ethnic minorities, women, and the poor have consistently been the targets of stereotyping, and as a result, they have been exploited and discriminated against throughout the nation’s history. African-Americans continue to face discrimination in markets for jobs, housing, and credit. Meanwhile, the militarization of the U.S.-Mexican border has discouraged Mexican migrants from leaving the United States, creating a pool of exploitable workers who lack the legal rights of citizens. Massey also shows that women’s advances in the labor market have been concentrated among the affluent and well-educated, while low-skilled female workers have been relegated to occupations that offer few chances for earnings mobility. At the same time, as the wages of low-income men have fallen, more working-class women are remaining unmarried and raising children on their own. Even as minorities and women continue to face these obstacles, the progressive legacy of the New Deal has come under frontal assault. The government has passed anti-union legislation, made taxes more regressive, allowed the real value of the federal minimum wage to decline, and drastically cut social welfare spending. As a result, the income gap between the richest and poorest has dramatically widened since 1980. Massey attributes these anti-poor policies in part to the increasing segregation of neighborhoods by income, which has insulated the affluent from the social consequences of poverty, and to the disenfranchisement of the poor, as the population of immigrants, prisoners, and ex-felons swells.

America’s unrivaled disparities are not simply the inevitable result of globalization and technological change. As Massey shows, privileged groups have systematically exploited and excluded many of their fellow Americans. By delving into the root causes of inequality in America, Categorically Unequal provides a compelling argument for the creation of a more equitable society.

Categorically Unequal reads more like...

Categorically Unequal reads more like an academic paper than a popular nonfiction book. It has a good overview of stratification and references a lot of research about stratification in the US. It was certainly eye opening.

I would have given Categorically Unequal 5 stars as an informative book. I gave it 3 stars because the way it pushes the liberal agenda is too neat and one-sided.

Best introduction to the topic of social stratification in the U.S.

Although this is not a textbook (strictly speaking), it reads like one, which is what I think the author intended. It is a concise and inexpensive introduction to the history of social inequality in the United States. Massey is one of the premier sociologists of stratification, so much of the literature he reviews, summarizes, and describes here is his own, or that of the many people he has trained and/or collaborated with over the years. No one knows the research better than he does, and it shows. Not only that, but he writes in a style that is accessible to the uninitiated reader.

Massey is a sociologist, but he approaches the topic of stratification from the perspective of cognitive psychology. He discusses how humans tend to lump people into categorical groups based on social characteristics. In the U.S. the most salient characteristics have been race, gender, and social class. He describes how our response to people in the preferred categories ('in-group'), as well as those in other categories ('out-groups') is to some extent 'hard-wired' in our brains and thus operates at a subconscious level. These primal prejudices have resulted in institutional practices and individual behaviors that have disadvantaged the poor, women, and people of color. Even some of the more progressive social welfare policies of the 20th century were intentionally crafted to exclude these 'undesirable' groups.

This book is a real eye-opener, but it is bound to frustrate some readers because Massey debunks the popular myth that America is a land of equal opportunity, in which any individual can succeed by dint of hard work and talent, irrespective of social characteristics. He does concede that there has been some recent improvement for certain disadvantaged groups, but he also demonstrates how past inequality persists - and can even compound its effect - into the present. Although I found his lapses into conventional liberal rhetoric annoying, his arguments were persuasive because of the overwhelming evidence he presents. If you're looking for an entry point into the sociological research on stratification, you can't do any better than this.

I cannot improve on the brilliant 5 star review by Martin Hughes. I take off one point because the book is not going to win any prizes for being interesting reading. It is too academic for most people. But it is an excellent book by a scholar with a well deserved reputation. Lots of information, good statistics, good references (40 pages), good index. About the Author
Henry Mintzberg is the author of several seminal books, including The Nature of Managerial Work, The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning, and Managers Not MBAs. He is Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies at McGill University.

Joseph Lampel is Professor of Strategy at Cass Business School, at City University London. He is the co-editor of the fourth edition of The Strategy Process and of The Business of Culture: Strategic Perspectives in Media and Entertainment.

Bruce Ahlstrand is a Professor at Trent University in Ontario.

Start here to learn about Strategy

This book provides a great introductory overview of the field of Strategic Management and is useful to any MBA or consultant with an interest in that area. It provides an overview of 10 schools of strategy, with an assessment of the contributions made by, and a brief critique of, each school. This helps you learn to spot the pitfalls of using one approach exclusively.
The text can occasionally be a bit academic however, since cases are not the authors' intent, so don't expect many "real world" examples. Nor is the book exhaustive, though it does provide a bibliography for further reading. Finally, the attempt to pull all 10 approaches together, while an admirable effort, may be little more than wishful thinking, since the tenets of some schools are difficult to reconcile.
With this in mind, the book is a great starting point for those exploring the field and a handy refresher for those with more experience. If you're interested in Strategic Management, this is as good a place to start.

Great view on art (not science)

Everyone is looking for the 'right' way to do strategy, and there are scores of academics willing to give it to you. Mintzberg (and team) guide you through all of it, the history, the pros and cons, and how to use it. If you can hold all of these schools of thought in your head at once, you can practice the art because you understand it ... you won't be at the mercy of consultants selling you the 'magic process.'

"Strategy Safari" on the Kindle DX

Ok, I got the Kindle version and was reading it on the DX but it was quite horrible. Lists and tables are not formatted properly, hence all the texts just get lumped together, which makes it really hard to read through the bulleted points; the bullets don't exist and there is no line break to seperate each points from each other. Diagrams (i.e. images) are blur and pixelated; they are probably meant for use on the Kindle 1 & 2 where the screen resolution is smaller. Lastly, text boxes appears without border lines, hence you would most like get confused when the paragraph suddenly changed subject. Stay away from the Kindle version if possible. Oh, and the first chapter should have 4 figures but they are all missing in the Kindle version. You make the call whether to buy the Kindle version.
