Space. Go out there, meet some strange...er, creatures, and shoot them!

Okay, here it goes.
The star of this little novel is Jon the Rock, itinerant, adventurer, native of a tiny jewel known as Terrania, who stumbled into the greatest engineering project in the galaxy. This poor dude is on his way home when he stops at a restaurant for a meal. The manager was an annoying crustacean. He placed his traveling bag into some lockers to get some good food, only to have the lockers get up and walk away with his possessions. The manager serves Jon the Rock several meals, live, all of whom beg him for their lives in Galactic Standard. After having a truly horrible dining experience in an alien restaurant, he finds his luggage stolen and then misses his flight home. Then he finds out that the next flight home is fifteen earth years away, and promptly signs up with a mercenary force just to get away from the alien space station before someone cons him out of the shirt on his back.
Just goes to show you that when traveling, always keep an eye on your stuff.
Not a good beginning for our hero, but it's damn funny.

AnnMaria De Mars is one of the most decorated U.S. judokas in the history of the sport. At her West Coast Judo Training Center she coaches athletes in judo, mixed martial arts and grappling. James Pedro Sr. has represented the United States as an international judo competitor in Europe and South America. He is the founder of Pedro s Judo Center where he coaches athletes in wrestling and mixed martial arts. They both live in Santa Monica, California.

Straightforward Reality Check for the Ground Game

This book was NOT what I expected - and I'm glad.

Originally, I got the book simply because I wanted to see what I was missing in my own ground game. I am not a competitor but I do have a vested interest in combatives as a martial artist and I have students who are in fact competitors. Wanting to see if there were any "nuggets of wisdom" I could pass on to them from the book, I got the Kindle edition and was very pleasantly surprised in the no-nonsense explanations, demonstrations and "reality checks" the book offered. More to the point, I enjoyed the way the book explained how to exploit the mistakes of others vs. spending so much time on critiquing the reader/judoka, etc.

One specific point I want to make: if you're getting this book simply because you're a fan of the "models" (Ronda Rousey - Olympic Bronze Medalist in Judo and the current UFC women's champ and Kayla Harrison, Olympic Gold Medalist in Judo and female world judo champion) that's nice but the REAL stars of the book are the authors Dr. DeMars and Mr. Pedro, Sr. Both have been crucial players in American Judo and the chapters in their book offer a lot to both beginning and advanced competitors but also in my opinion to folks who need to work on how to exploit the weaknesses of those who would use the ground game against them. By that I mean BJJ stylists, non-grappler martial artists who end up on the ground, prospective and current MMA folks and even folks who prefer "stand up" who end up going against a grappler with significant skill.

Finally, the book STRONGLY EMPHASIZES training and preparedness. In fact, one point made in the beginning is that thought AND effort are essential for a good ground game. You know everything yet unless you practice it, you won't win. If all you do is work on the mats without thinking about strategy and application, you won't win. Work the techniques in this book, demonstrated by champions who have applied the techniques in actual competitions and you have a much better chance!

Bottom line - this is simply one of the best books out there on the subject and an essential part of any martial artists library - but more importantly a book that needs to be READ and APPLIED. Kudos to Coach Pedro, Sr., Dr. DeMars and all the rest.

Fantastic book for any level Judoka or even grappler. Instead of putting a lot of techniques in the book focuses on the right techniques executed the right way in the right mind set. This makes this book the right read whether you're looking to tighten up your game or are new and want inspirational introduction that limits bad habits. The Doctor is definitely in.

One of the best judo books I own (out of about 100)

I began collecting judo (and some BJJ) books about 7 years ago--classics, new ones, rare and expensive, and not-so-rare--all in an effort to find that perfect book or two that can help me with judo (my obsession). I'm not young (49) so over the past couple years I've been gravitating more away from the high-amplitude, dynamic throwing techniques, and more towards the ground / grappling techniques where I can still be competitive--the pins, strangles, and armlocks. This book completely fulfills my needs for a manual on how to develop a winning strategy and seamlessly transition from a throw to a pin or submission. It's straightforward, pithy, well-written, and logical. And, it's non-conventional, which is refreshing. It should be in any judoka's or BJJ-er's library.

Mehdi Khosrow-Pour, D.B.A. received his Doctorate in Business Administration from the Nova Southeastern University (Florida, USA). Dr. Khosrow-Pour taught undergraduate and graduate information system courses at the Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg for 20 years. He is currently Executive Editor at IGI Global (www.igi-global.com). He also serves as Executive Director of the Information Resources Management Association (IRMA) (www.irma-international.org), and Executive Director and President of the World Forgotten Childrens Foundation (www.world-forgotten-children.org). He is the author/editor of over twenty books in information technology management.
