Categorically Unequal is striking both for its theoretical originality and for the breadth of topics it covers. Massey argues that social inequalities arise from the universal human tendency to place others into social categories. In America, ethnic minorities, women, and the poor have consistently been the targets of stereotyping, and as a result, they have been exploited and discriminated against throughout the nation’s history. African-Americans continue to face discrimination in markets for jobs, housing, and credit. Meanwhile, the militarization of the U.S.-Mexican border has discouraged Mexican migrants from leaving the United States, creating a pool of exploitable workers who lack the legal rights of citizens. Massey also shows that women’s advances in the labor market have been concentrated among the affluent and well-educated, while low-skilled female workers have been relegated to occupations that offer few chances for earnings mobility. At the same time, as the wages of low-income men have fallen, more working-class women are remaining unmarried and raising children on their own. Even as minorities and women continue to face these obstacles, the progressive legacy of the New Deal has come under frontal assault. The government has passed anti-union legislation, made taxes more regressive, allowed the real value of the federal minimum wage to decline, and drastically cut social welfare spending. As a result, the income gap between the richest and poorest has dramatically widened since 1980. Massey attributes these anti-poor policies in part to the increasing segregation of neighborhoods by income, which has insulated the affluent from the social consequences of poverty, and to the disenfranchisement of the poor, as the population of immigrants, prisoners, and ex-felons swells.

America’s unrivaled disparities are not simply the inevitable result of globalization and technological change. As Massey shows, privileged groups have systematically exploited and excluded many of their fellow Americans. By delving into the root causes of inequality in America, Categorically Unequal provides a compelling argument for the creation of a more equitable society.

Categorically Unequal reads more like...

Categorically Unequal reads more like an academic paper than a popular nonfiction book. It has a good overview of stratification and references a lot of research about stratification in the US. It was certainly eye opening.

I would have given Categorically Unequal 5 stars as an informative book. I gave it 3 stars because the way it pushes the liberal agenda is too neat and one-sided.

Best introduction to the topic of social stratification in the U.S.

Although this is not a textbook (strictly speaking), it reads like one, which is what I think the author intended. It is a concise and inexpensive introduction to the history of social inequality in the United States. Massey is one of the premier sociologists of stratification, so much of the literature he reviews, summarizes, and describes here is his own, or that of the many people he has trained and/or collaborated with over the years. No one knows the research better than he does, and it shows. Not only that, but he writes in a style that is accessible to the uninitiated reader.

Massey is a sociologist, but he approaches the topic of stratification from the perspective of cognitive psychology. He discusses how humans tend to lump people into categorical groups based on social characteristics. In the U.S. the most salient characteristics have been race, gender, and social class. He describes how our response to people in the preferred categories ('in-group'), as well as those in other categories ('out-groups') is to some extent 'hard-wired' in our brains and thus operates at a subconscious level. These primal prejudices have resulted in institutional practices and individual behaviors that have disadvantaged the poor, women, and people of color. Even some of the more progressive social welfare policies of the 20th century were intentionally crafted to exclude these 'undesirable' groups.

This book is a real eye-opener, but it is bound to frustrate some readers because Massey debunks the popular myth that America is a land of equal opportunity, in which any individual can succeed by dint of hard work and talent, irrespective of social characteristics. He does concede that there has been some recent improvement for certain disadvantaged groups, but he also demonstrates how past inequality persists - and can even compound its effect - into the present. Although I found his lapses into conventional liberal rhetoric annoying, his arguments were persuasive because of the overwhelming evidence he presents. If you're looking for an entry point into the sociological research on stratification, you can't do any better than this.

Excellent book, great scholar

I cannot improve on the brilliant 5 star review by Martin Hughes. I take off one point because the book is not going to win any prizes for being interesting reading. It is too academic for most people. But it is an excellent book by a scholar with a well deserved reputation. Lots of information, good statistics, good references (40 pages), good index. Start here to learn about Strategy

This book provides a great introductory overview of the field of Strategic Management and is useful to any MBA or consultant with an interest in that area. It provides an overview of 10 schools of strategy, with an assessment of the contributions made by, and a brief critique of, each school. This helps you learn to spot the pitfalls of using one approach exclusively.
The text can occasionally be a bit academic however, since cases are not the authors' intent, so don't expect many "real world" examples. Nor is the book exhaustive, though it does provide a bibliography for further reading. Finally, the attempt to pull all 10 approaches together, while an admirable effort, may be little more than wishful thinking, since the tenets of some schools are difficult to reconcile.
With this in mind, the book is a great starting point for those exploring the field and a handy refresher for those with more experience. If you're interested in Strategic Management, this is as good a place to start.

Mintzberg (and team) guide you through all of it, the history, the pros and cons, and how to use it. If you can hold all of these schools of thought in your head at once, you can practice the art because you understand it ... you won't be at the mercy of consultants selling you the 'magic process.'

Lists and tables are not formatted properly, hence all the texts just get lumped together, which makes it really hard to read through the bulleted points; the bullets don't exist and there is no line break to seperate each points from each other. Diagrams (i.e. images) are blur and pixelated; they are probably meant for use on the Kindle 1 & 2 where the screen resolution is smaller. Lastly, text boxes appears without border lines, hence you would most like get confused when the paragraph suddenly changed subject. Stay away from the Kindle version if possible. Oh, and the first chapter should have 4 figures but they are all missing in the Kindle version. You make the call whether to buy the Kindle version.

This is a must read for anyone interested in political/economic issues.
Dr. Armentano presents a solid case of how a well intentioned law intending to protect the consumer actually ends up with the opposite effect.
A private firm in a free market, ie one that has no government sanctioned barriers to entry, can only maintain a degree of monopoly power by being efficient and charging such a low price for its' product that potential competitors cannot profitably compete. That situation would benefit the consumer, yet according to Anti Trust laws such a firm would be subject to being broken up. Meanwhile firms in regulated industries reap monopoly profits due artificial barriers to entry instituted by the government regulatory agency. Firms in regulated industries are not subject to Antitrust laws.

After reading this book one can apply its' logic to see the real reasons behind the recent Epi pen scandal. The marketer of the Epi pen had no competition because the FDA would not allow other firms to enter the market. Meanwhile the politicians and press are strangely silent in diagnosing the problem in this case.
The fault lies totally with the FDA which is working in conjunction with Mylan to create an government sanctioned monopoly in which the FDA creates barriers to entry into the market which allows the firm to exploit the consumer. The FDA and other regulatory agencies often behave in this manner, all under the guise of "protecting the consumer" when in reality they are having the exact opposite effect.

Government privilege is the soul author the damaging practice of monopoly. Private monopolies are formed temporarily from cutting prices and improving service. Private monopolies cannot last long otherwise because there is an invulnerable difference between no competition and no possibility of competition. This is the standard work in opposition to these government privilege rent-seeking laws of "anti-trust".

Needed this book to help me prepare for a lecture, "Deathbed Art." It was helpful but didn't inspire me to read the sections that weren't focused on my particular theme or the artist, Manet. I've donated it to the Museum. It's safe there & I can find it again if I need it.

This is a good book overall for kickstarting learning of x64 assembly. You probably need to know some x86 assembly (or other concepts) to get the most out of this book. Still recommended as my "go to" book for learning x64 assembly.

This is a book for beginners. If you would rather learn assembly language with x64, this is for you.

The book explores the assembly language as generated by the C compiler for various simple to more complex constructs. It uses windbg (Microsoft most powerful debugger) as its main exploration tool and can be considered as a gentle introduction to windbg as well.

Pretest ER 3rd edition is pretty comprehensive and tests over the major topics one needs to know for ER. Some questions may be a little easier than what may be seen on the shelf exam but overall the book still gives a good base of knowledge for the test.

This book came into existence because there did not seem to be any single book that would be adequate as a text for courses on hearing aids or that could advise practicing clinicians on all aspects of hearing aids.

I have aimed to make the book both practically useful and theoretically sound. Issues are explained rather then described. Wherever possible, practical recommendations are based on empirical research, and where there is no research to draw upon, the tentative nature of the recommendation or conclusion is indicated. Readers who already know the field well will notice that the book contains some data and clinical procedures that are published for the first time, as well as hopefully some new insights and perspectives into older issues.

The book is designed to be read on a number of levels. For readers who need only an overview of a topic, the synopsis at the beginning of each chapter should suffice. Most readers will hopefully be enticed to read further; the essential information on each topic is marked with a shaded bar in the margin. These marked paragraphs are designed to be read, and to be understandable, without the intervening paragraphs. I think of the marked material as a thin book buried inside this thick book. Some academic courses may wish to restrict themselves to just this material, which includes approximately half the book. The remaining material provides a greater level of detail. Finally, the most detailed comments are tucked away as footnotes and as sections in small print. The material at all levels is further segmented by presenting the most theoretical material and the most practical material in the form of self-contained panels. Best investment I ever made

Anyone in the field of Audiology knows this book as The Bible. I bought it four years ago and I use it as a reference book constantly. Do yourself a favor and bind this book because it will get worn! It is a comprehensive guide to hearing aids and it explains most terms in a simple and understandable manner. Some concepts will not seem simple right away, but read explanations from anyone else, and you will realize that Dillon is a master at explaining very complex concepts. I have taken two hearing aid courses based solely on this book and I strongly recommend it to anyone in our field.

great book covering many aspects of hearing aids

I'm just an interested amateur, but this books covers lots of areas in some depth regarding the technology and fitting of hearing aids. It would be nice to see a little more mathematical/engineering approach, but this book seems to be aimed at audiologists, and is well suited for that use.

Helped me with Board Certification Test

This book isn't up to date per se (OTC's in particular), however, the basic information it contains is fantastic. I give credit to this textbook for helping me to pass the national exam for NBC-HIS, without which I feel I may have very likely failed. The book is thorough in its approach to hearing aids and contains a great amount of information that all hearing professionals need to know. I keep my copy in my library as a ready reference. The only reason that I do not give it five stars is that it is 10 years old. Apart from this, it is an excellant book to study and keep as a useful reference. I highly recommend it.
