This is not an exhaustive reference but would make a good Cliff Notes sort of review for registry review

This is a concise, practical pocket-book of MRI covering the basics. It is written in mildly Indian-English, meaning that a few a, an's, and "the"s are skipped. It is a small sized guide that would fit in a lab coat pocket. This is not an exhaustive reference but would make a good Cliff Notes sort of review for registry review. The author categorizes and summarizes subjects well, which is in contrast to one of the major textbooks in the field written by a woman author in the UK.

Great reference

I'm a low-income college student and bought this in lieu of the 90 dollar full size NKBA books (I use those at the library as needed). I use this book pretty constantly, and will likely continue to do so until I've committed all of these measurements to memory.

It's 50 pages or so... concise and without much flowery language. Theres a glossary in the front to get to the height of the toilet paper roll within a few lines of reading. The graphic design is *ok*... but I don't know that there's any competition or reason to design it into anything other than a handy reference.

Worth every penny.

This is an excellent resource. Both the booklet and the digital App that Amazon sells is extremely useful. I am an interior design instructor, and I require my students to have access to the NKBA, National Kitchen and Bath Association guidelines for space planning residential kitchens and bathrooms. Whether you are a design student, or a savvy home remodeler, you must use this easy-to-read guide as the premise for starting any project. This guide will ensure that you are able to design a bathroom or kitchen space safely and efficiently. As an added bonus, this covers ADA, Americans with Disabilities Act, guidelines as well. I think this manual should be in every builder's, contractor's, and home owner's library.

It's a lot more than just concurrency - it's the best introduction to C i've seen.

This is an awesome book. You'll have to be patient when going through it. And you'll learn a lot if you follow along with the examples and make everything work. It took me probably 6 hours just to get through chapter 2 - not because I can't read, but because I'm paying attention to every little detail, and making sure I learn what's going on.

The other thing that came as a big surprise, was that this is the best introduction to C i've come across. I've read quite a few books on C. Generally, I get through these other books on C - I get the syntax and pointers, and headers, etc. What I can never get through in these other C books, is that they use Math for all the examples. Which bores me, and sometimes frustrates me - because what I want to do with systems programming is not math - that's just me.

Of all the C books I've read, this one, and "C - A Reference Manual 5th Edition" are the best C books.

One pitfall in the book, is that with most of the examples, the conditionals to check pointers, and some other conditionals are somewhat amateur looking (that's just me). For example, in chapter 2, the "listlib.c" file has tons of conditionals like this:

list_t **newptrs;
if(headptr == NULL)
{
errno = EINVAL;
return -1;
}

That started to confuse me, why not just write:

list_t **newptrs;
if(!headptr)
{
errno = EINVAL;
return -1;
}

Which is ok. So there are many times where it seems the author is either purposefully writing conditionals to be verbose for readers, or doesn't know how to simplify with "not" flips.

Another example:

if(ptr != NULL)

can be simplified to:
if(ptr)

Other than those small things, this book is great.

EDIT: One other thing that's slightly annoying.

The authors like to put all of their code in conditionals. Like this:

if ((sigemptyset(&twosigs) == -1) || (sigaddset(&twosigs, SIGINT) == -1) || (sigaddset(&twosigs, SIGQUIT) == -1)) perror("Failed to set up signal mask");

For me that's ok in only a few places. They do it everywhere and it's really annoying. Maybe they did it just to save space in the book?

Excellent starting ground to do Unix Programming

I used this book to start to learn from scratch how to programming Unix. This book is self-contained,concise and easy to read. FYI, it is very readable and not dry. There's a number of good diagrams, for example,illustrating file descriptors allocations and the effects of system calls like dup2, etc. The authors uses short code snipplet to illustrate how to use a particular system calls, which I think is rather neat. A number of "projects" very quickly help reader to expand their skill level. Of interest is also a project on distributed "Richard" and "Linda" , the forerunner of Sun's JINI. The authors could have expanded this book another 100 pages and make it a companion to Steven's "Advanced Unix System Programming". I strongly recommend this book to beginners, intermediate Unix Programmers.

It really is a very good book.

The best part is the code examples. Neither did I know C , nor I knew Unix before I took this grad level systems programming course. It was a sort of painful for me to muddle thru that class. But I got thru it. Most importantly, I learned a lot about C, systems programming and Unix from the code examples. You read the authors explanation on some topic. You perhaps won't understand what is going on immediately. But You will after you have read the code. I enjoyed reading it. This is a very well organized textbook. It is a good read for people who have some background in C or other languages and want to know systems programming.
However, you should combine it with advanced programming in the UNIX Environment by W.richard Stevens if you are an ambitious UNIX-geek-wannabe.
Advanced programming in the UNIX Environment by W.richard Stevens is a bit dated. But it still complements this book quite a bit.

About the Author

Roger Azevedo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and an affiliated member of the Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) at The University of Memphis. He is currently the Director of the Cognitive Psychology Area in the Department of Psychology and the Director of the Cognition and Technology Research Laboratory (azevedolab.autotutor.org). In 1998 he received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from McGill University. He did his postdoctoral training in the Department of Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Azevedo then earned a faculty appointment in the Department of Human Development at the University of Maryland. His primary research interests are in cognitive science, human learning and performance, and the learning sciences. More specific interests include metacognition and self-regulated learning, complex learning, human and computerized tutoring, intelligent computer-based learning environments, and education. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Educational Psychology and serves on the editorial board of six top-tiered international journals including Metacognition and Learning, Educational Psychologist, Educational Psychology Review, and Instructional Science. He reviews papers and performs committee functions for the American Educational Research Association, International Society of Artificial Intelligence in Education, International Society of the Learning Sciences, American Psychological Association, and European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction. He has received several research awards, including an NSF Early Career Grant and Educational Technology Research & Development’s 2008 outstanding journal article. He is also the recipient of several NSF and NIH grants that focus on metacognition, SRL, and complex science topics with learning technologies. Dr. Azevedo is an advisory board member for the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center (PSLC) and a regular panel member for the Institute of Education Sciences and National Science Foundation. In addition to publishing over 100 articles in journals, books, and conference proceedings, he has (co-)edited five special issues of key journals in the learning and cognitive sciences. He has played a major role in bringing in to the University of Maryland and the University of Memphis over $7 million in grant funding during the last ten years as either PI or co-PI. He has designed, developed, and tested advanced computerized, intelligent learning environments for medical and biological sciences including the RadTutor, SICUN tutor, CircSysWeb, and MetaTutor.

Vincent Aleven is (as of July 1, 2009) an Associate Professor in Carnegie Mellon’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute, and has over 17 years of experience in research and development of educational software based on cognitive science theory, with a focus on intelligent tutors for middle-school and high-school mathematics. His research has been published in journals such as Cognitive Science, Review of Educational Research, Educational Psychology Review, the International Journal on Artificial Intelligence and Education, and Artificial Intelligence. In a number of projects, he has demonstrated that intelligent tutor functionality can effectively support metacognition. He demonstrated empirically that students learn better when the tutor supports metacognition in the form of self-explanation; improvements developed in this research project were incorporated into Carnegie Learning’s Cognitive Tutor Geometry™, which is used daily in hundreds of U.S. schools. In research focused on a different metacognitive skill, help seeking, Aleven and colleagues showed that a tutor agent based on a detailed computer model of help seeking can lead to lasting improvement in students’ help-seeking behavior with tutoring software. In other research, he and colleagues have created the CTAT authoring tools that enable non-programmers to create tutors much more cost-effectively than programmers used to create them. He is currently funded by Institute of Education Sciences (IES) to use the CTAT tools to develop a freely available website for middle-school mathematics learning, called MathTutor (webmathtutor.org). Further, Aleven and his colleagues have shown empirically that student learning with a cognitive tutor is improved when the tutor is enhanced with interactive examples. A paper describing this research won the Cognition and Student Learning prize sponsored by IES, given to "the best full paper submission to the 2008 Annual Conference of the Cognitive Science Society on a topic directly related to cognitive science, educational practice and subject-matter learning." He twice won a best paper award at the International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems. Aleven is a member of the Executive Committee of the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center, an NSF-sponsored research center spanning multiple departments both at Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh. He is also a member of the steering committee of CMU’s PIER pre-doctoral scholarship program for educational research, funded by IES. He is a co-founder of Carnegie Learning, Inc., a Pittsburgh-based company that markets Cognitive Tutor™ math courses. He has served on the program committee of major conferences in intelligent tutoring systems, and has organized numerous workshops during these conferences. He will be the Program Committee Co-Chair of the 2010 International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems. He has been PI on four major research grants and co-PI on six others.

The Bilingual Mind: Thinking, Feeling, and Speaking in Two Languages� fills a critical gap in the cross-cultural literature by illuminating the bilingual experience in both its social and clinical contexts.

Rafael Javier makes a convincing, empirically founded case for what he terms the bilingual mind, with its own particular approach to cognition, memory, and emotional and social development. From this framework, he proceeds to salient but seldom examined questions such as:

Javier does an amazing job of describing the complex world of the bilingual mind. For anyone involved in working with bilinguals in a mental health setting, it is important to understand the concepts Javier brings to improve our understanding that speaking English (or the dominant language) does not mean that the emotions of the individual are translated as easily. I am happy I made this purchase.

Free Food for Millionaires, the debut novel from Min Jin Lee, takes on daunting themes of love, money, race, and belief systems in this mostly satisfying tale. Casey Han is a Princeton grad, class of '93, and it is her conflicts, relationships, and temperament that inform the novel. She is the child of immigrant Korean parents who work in the same laundry in Queens where they have always worked and are trying hard to hang on to their culture. Casey has catapulted out of that life on scholarships but now that college is over, she hasn't the same opportunities as her white friends, even though she has acquired all of their expensive habits.

The concept of free food for millionaires is the perfect irony that describes much of what Casey faces. Walter, one of her bosses, says, when a huge buffet lunch is delivered to the floor: "It's free food for millionaires... In the International Equities Department--that is, Asia, Europe, and Japan Sales--the group you're interviewing for--whichever desk that sells a deal buys lunch for everyone in the department."

Casey is ambivalent about everything--her love life, work, friendships, her family, dating a Korean man--but she seems to believe that money would sort everything out and smooth any rough spots. She works part-time for a fashion maven who would like to "adopt" her by paying for business school, but Casey can't quite accept all that she offers. She pulls back from help, digs herself deeper in debt, works like a slave during an internship and then, when she is offered the job, finally begins to realize what she might really want--and it isn't only money.

There are several loose ends left dangling, some bad behavior toward others on Casey's part and an unlikely and too coincidental passing acquaintance with an old bookseller whose wife was crazy about hats, as is Casey. When he dies, he leaves all her hats to Casey--which just might just be the start of something. The author runs out of steam after 512 pages and ends the book without really finishing it, but it is a thoughtful treatment of many of the questions Lee raises, and an emninently worthwhile debut. --Valerie Ryan

In her noteworthy debut, Lee filters through a lively postfeminist perspective a tale of first-generation immigrants stuck between stodgy parents and the hip new world. Lee's heroine, 22-year-old Casey Han, graduates magna cum laude in economics from Princeton with a taste for expensive clothes and an "enviable golf handicap," but hasn't found a "real" job yet, so her father kicks her out of his house. She heads to her white boyfriend's apartment only to find him in bed with two sorority girls. Next stop: running up her credit card at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City. Casey's luck turns after a chance encounter with Ella Shim, an old acquaintance. Ella gives Casey a place to stay, while Ella's fiancé gets Casey a "low pay, high abuse" job at his investment firm and Ella's cousin Unu becomes Casey's new romance. Lee creates a large canvas, following Casey as she shifts between jobs, careers, friends, mentors and lovers; Ella and Ted as they hit a blazingly rocky patch; and Casey's mother, Leah, as she belatedly discovers her own talents and desires. Though a first-novel timidity sometimes weakens the narrative, Lee's take on contemporary intergenerational cultural friction is wide-ranging, sympathetic and well worth reading. (May)

Lee mixes feminism and cultural awareness to create a sweeping story of first-generation Korean Americans finding their way between the old world and the new. Casey Han, her 22-year-old heroine, is having trouble turning her Princeton economics degree into a job. When her authoritarian father throws her out, she goes to her white boyfriend for solace only to find him with in bed with two sorority girls. Just as all looks lost, she meets a rich school acquaintance, Ella Shim, who offers her a place to stay and convinces her fiance to help Casey^B get a job. Casey's taste for expensive clothes keeps her in debt. Ella's shyness makes it easy for her husband to cheat on her. And Casey's father's coldness makes it hard for her mother to ignore kindness from another quarter. With very broad strokes and great detail, Lee paints colorful three-dimensional characters and outlines intergenerational and cultural struggles brilliantly. There is a little first-novel shyness on some issues but nothing the rest of the narrative doesn't make up for. Elizabeth Dickie

Kept me reading

Simply a good read. I could pick it apart. Yes, could have been shorter. Yes, could be a soap opera with all its characters and plot with a number of cheaters. But let's go back to my first sentence: simply a good read. Sometimes that's more than enough--500+ pages to keep a reader reading.

Wonderful and a must read

I grew up reading all the time. Growing up with the Boxcar children, the Little House on the Prarie, the Indian in the Cupboard, Beloved, To Kill a Mockingbird, I felt the dearth of Asian American voices. Amy Tan was the only Asian-American author whose books were available at the library.

As a younger adult, I found Don Lee, Chang-rae Lee, and today there are thankfully more, and Min Jin Lee's FFfM could not have come into my life at a better time. Lee talks about writing for a target audience, even if one hopes that more folks beyond the target audience is reading. I feel that I AM that target audience. And thank goodness for the novel. Casey Han could have been me.

In many ways, I feel that this novel should be taught alongside other stories of the US, and suspect that it will be.

As to the commentors complaining about the length, and choppiness, I did not find that to detract from the story at all. In some ways, I welcomed the additional glimpse into the various other characters' lives. It was a bit unexpected, but a fun break from all that Casey was going through. I loved the NYC moments, the korean moments, the ivy educated elitist moments. Simply loved it all.

I couldn't put it down...

I don't think people understand what it takes to write from so many compelling perspectives and have it be so interesting!!! This is the closest you might get to feeling the pains of an angst filled over ambitious but aimless East Coast child of Asian immigrants. There were some reflective passages that just nailed observations of humanity at its best and worst!

Plot wise, it's an Americanized Korean Drama. Group sex, church scandals, money pains, affairs in investment banking stock trading halls- the book is also so funny, in a dark smirky way.

The ending is abrupt but perfect, because this has to be book 1 of a trilogy! I hope there will be more and movie TV rights get sold.
