Great for youngsters

I found this book very helpful and informative for my kindergarten class. It is both simplistic enough for them to grasp the information and stay "engaged" as well as, complex enough for children to learn several attributes of a starfish...and remember it! There is also a great activity supplied at the end of the book. It's been a winner for me at home and at school. Great for beginners to science.

A hugely important work on sexuality and gender in the Classical World

Since the previous reviewer loved the book, but his review was deemed somewhat unhelpful (I thought it was fine), I thought I'd add a bit. This book pretty much kickstarted the exploration of sexuality and gender in the Classical World. There were other works before it, particularly on gender, but the publication of The Constraints of Desire was one of those events that helped a particular area of study achieve critical mass, so to speak. If you have an interest in these topics, it will pretty much be assumed that you've absorbed what he has to say.
The previous reviewer is quite right to spotlight Chapter 2. For me, when I read it as an undergraduate, it was of importance far beyond even the study of sexuality and gender. What Winkler helps one understand is one area of many where our own categories and horizons of expectation prohibit us from understanding another culture. Steeped in more modern methodologies of cultural and social history than Classicists usually were at the time, he was able to tear down the terribly ineffective framework of interpretation which he inherited and build a new one.
While not critical to the appreciation of the work itself, on a biographical note, there is something both sad and inspiring about an author who struggled to reconcile his Faith and his sexuality and ultimately left the church (he was a Benedictine) to become a scholar who taught at Yale and Stanford. Sadly, he died at age 46. Having studied under some people who had known him personally as colleagues, I can say that his death was a great personal as well as professional loss to the community. So, in addition to its great value as scholarship, the book is treated with a certain amount of (I think merited) reverence. Not that it stopped anyone from engaging with it critically.

very interesting book

It's a very readable and well researched book about the sex and gender in ancient Greece.
I recommend it for everybody who is interested in the Greek history, gynaikologia, sexologia, and anthoropologia.
The most interesting thesis for me is the Chapter 2. of Part One ; "Laying Down the Law : The Oversight of Men's Sexual Behavior in Classical Athens",in which Mr. Winkler investigates the meanings of "kinaidos", "katapygon", "pornos" kai "kalos".

STUNNING BEAUTY

FABULOUS . . . the jewelry is amazing. Personal comments from Elizabeth like having her speak to you directly of her love for these treasures and those associated with them. Many photos of her a bonus. Have wanted this book since it was published and thrilled to finally own it. You will laugh and cry while reading about how many of the pieces came to her. Some unbelievably expensive, others valued beyond price. I seem to remember when the book came out about her saying this was the closest she would come to talking about her love affairs. A lasting tribute of a great lady with a most generous and loving heart. I wonder where many of these jewels now reside . . .

Grandma loved it

I didn't read this book. I bought it as a gift for my 87 year old grandmother. Someone had mentioned this book on another website and I came here to look it over.
I was impressed. The photographs I saw and the reviews were impressive. I knew she would love it. I bought it for her for Mother's Day.
She phoned me to tell me how much she LOVED it! I've never seen her go on and on about a book. I know if she didn't love the book she would have just said "Thank you sweetheart." But this was a different reaction. Her friends have seen the book on the table in the living room and tell her how much they love it. And how the photographs are superb.
I'm sure when I visit her I will spend hours looking at this book at her house. She told me that she spent hours and hours just sitting in the chair looking at all the great photos.

You learn nothing from this book except that you wish you bought a book that included any tangible information. I also learned that I am glad that I do not have to deal with or understand UK currency. If you would like a book that deals with budgeting and forcasting, then get a real textbook that includes explanations and formulas, not this one.

Struggle for Supremancy

If you liked the original "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" or the superb tv series by the same name, you will enjoy this book. The book follows the genius strategist Zhuge Liang as he aides Liu Bei in his efforts to reunite China. A parade of villains and heroes (depending on your view) try to outfight and out-think each other in this struggle for supremacy.

I will definitely be following this author as he develops. Chinese history is deep and rich and very rarely explored by western writers and audiences, I am looking forward to learning more.

STRONG BOOK OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP

This book really captured the trials and trumphs it take to be a strong entrepreneur. Each entreprener was challenged to compete with the big boys of their industries and did it with grace and style. They discussed ways of securing capital, finding qualified employees who could embrace their vision and help them take their operations to the next level. Each entrepreneur showed that he had the drive, passion, creative genius, and perseverance to pursue and achieve the American Dream.

Way back in 1979, or thereabouts, I attended a 2-day workshop led by Ferdinand Fournies that was called "Coaching For Improved Work Performance." I have never since, in my entire Human Resources career, attended a workshop more memorable, more fascinating or more useful. The book we received, and upon which the workshop was based? Yup...Coaching for Improved Work Performance. It was brilliant then, and it's brilliant now. There must have been around 40 attendees, all HR professionals, and every single one of us was open-mouthed when Mr. Fournies asked is "why is it that employees don't do what you want them to do?"...and proceeded to give us 14 separate, clear, logical, and convincing reasons why, and equally clear examples of each reason.

It was an eye-opener that I've never forgotten, and even though I've just bought the updated version of the book I've still got my original...with Mr. Fournies' signature! Whether you're a manager, a supervisor or a Boy Scout troop leader, this book will make you understand what you need to do to get commitment, comprehension and great performance from your team.

We often assume that when we hire people that they know how to perform the work that we are asking them to do. I've learned that ten years of experience often means one year ten times. I recommend this book to all who supervise people. I purchased one of the first editions many years ago. I purchased the most recent addition so that I could brush up. I've seen the positive impact of coaching others and teaching others to coach others.

About the Author
Born in Eastern Tibet in 1938, Ch�gyal Namkhai Norbu�is an internationally known Dzogchen Buddhist teacher and author. The direct descendant of the first Dzogchen Tibetan master of Tibet, Norbu spent his childhood receiving many teachings from masters of various traditions. In the 1960s he was invited to teach in Italy. During his career he wrote many books on Tibetan culture and Dzogchen Buddhism. He is the founder of two nonprofit organizations including the Shang Shung Institute for Tibetan Studies, which is dedicated to the preservation of Tibetan culture.

Born and raised in Italy, Fabio Andrico�is an internationally recognized expert in the unique tradition of Tibetan yoga known as yantra yoga. Currently a hatha and yantra yoga instructor and teacher trainer, he studied directly under Tibetan scholar and Dzogchen master Chogyal Namkhai Norbu.

A much clearer addition to the Yantra Yoga library

This book provides a clearer and more detailed explanation and demonstration of the 18 preliminary exercises and 25 basic yantras in the yoga system taught by Namkhai Norbu. The first book provided line drawings made from photos and a terse explanation of the movements based on the Tibetan root text. Together with the DVD series, the first book (which gives the very logical variations on the 25 basic poses) was sufficient for a dedicated practitioner with some background in hatha yoga to work things out for themselves safely and in accordance with the teachings.

The new book gives a much clearer, better-illustrated, and comprehensive explanation of the 25 basic yantras. What is particularly useful are the various tips and suggestions the authors make about adapting the yantra to your physical limits (weight, age, stiffness, etc.) so that you are able to practice the yantra and obtain the benefits (which are every real and which manifest themselves very quickly) without feeling that your opractice is somehow inferior or incomplete, or just not as good as the much younger and more limber models whose photographs appear in the book.

I would recommend using this book with the DVD sets, as it is a bit difficult to actually receive instruction in these yantra from one of Namkhai Norbu's teachers.

Fantastic introduction to Yantra Yoga

This beautifully designed book is a great introduction to an ancient system of Tibetan Yoga that seems to provide so much benefit in modern times. The book is amazingly designed with beautiful color illustrations, easy to follow instructions, clear and in depth descriptions of what Yantra Yoga is and instructions on the movements, as well as an entire section wonderfully illustrated for warm ups exercises that cannot be found in any other yoga text I have used. From this book you can understand that the system of Yantra Yoga is unique and unlike any other yoga system you have encountered in a yoga market saturated with so many different forms, real and not so real. Also there are recommended sessions with a variety of times based on the schedule of the user, so you can do longer sessions and shorter, and all are complete within themselves. This book is also a great compliment for the video, Yantra Yoga the Tibetan Yoga of Movement, which I also own. Using these 2 tools together can help to enable someone to follow and develop some sort of Yantra Yoga practice. What I did notice was that I found that once reading the book and watching the video, I kind of longed to find a class where I could learn from a qualified instructor, as both Ch�gyal Namkhai Norbu, the author of the original text and holder of this lineage of Yantra Yoga, and Fabio Andrico, one of the 2 main international instructors and author of this text, recommend. I looked around on the internet and did discover a website called yantrayoga.org that has listings of classes around the world. As far as books on yoga, this book rates as the top one in my library at this time, and therefore the system of yantra yoga is something I am so happy to have discovered and hope I can pursue more in depth. Kudos to Ch�gyal Namkhai Norbu for bringing this text into the modern age and Fabio Andrico for providing us with this marvelous, accessible text!

Clear, vital instruction.

If you know of Yantra Yoga, there is no need to discuss it's key role in the cultivation of meditation experience. Rather, what stands out with this yoga manual is it's extraordinary clarity of instruction. The text and photography that guide you through the sequences, breath and posture, is crystalline in method and intention. Enjoy!
