About the Author

Tim Szigeti, CCIE No. 9794, is a senior technical leader in the Systems Design Unit at Cisco Systems, where his role is to design network architectures for enterprise mobility solutions. He has specialized in quality of service technologies for the past 15 years, during which time he has authored many technical papers, design guides, and two Cisco Press books: End-to-End QoS Network Design (version 1) and Cisco TelePresence Fundamentals.

Robert Barton, CCIE No. 6660, is located in Vancouver, where he lives with his wife and two children. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in engineering physics, and is a registered professional engineer. Rob holds dual CCIEs, in Routing and Switching and Security, and was also the first CCDE in Canada. Rob joined Cisco from ArrowPoint Communications, where he worked as a data center specialist supporting many of the largest corporations in Canada. In the time since ArrowPoint was acquired by Cisco, Rob has worked as a public sector systems engineer, primarily focused on wireless and security architectures. Currently, Rob is working on SmartGrid network technologies, including smart meter and intelligent substation design.

Christina Hattingh spent 13 years as a senior member of the technical staff in Unified Communications (UC) in the Enterprise Networking Routing Group (formerly Services Routing Technology Group or SRTG) at Cisco Systems. The SRTG products, including the Cisco 2900/3900 and 2800/3800 series ISR platforms and their predecessors, were the first Cisco platforms to converge voice, data, and video traffic and services on IP networks by offering TDM gateway interfaces, WAN interfaces, call control, and QoS features. The ISR series of routers often live at smaller remote offices and therefore at the edge of the WAN, where the need for QoS services is most sensitive. In this role, Christina spoke at Cisco Live conferences, trained Cisco sales staff and Cisco resale partners on router-based UC technologies, authored several Cisco Press books, and advised customers on UC network deployment and design, including QoS designs and helping them through the TDM to SIP trunk industry transition.

All Things Cisco QoS

As a Network Consultant and CCIE 5022, I have worked with Cisco QoS since, frankly, the beginning of QoS (yes I am old). I have been eagerly awaiting this books release. In the two weeks, I have had this book; I have already referred to it several times to gain additional insight. This book is an all-encompassing presentation and tutorial on Cisco Quality of Service (QoS).

The book flows very well. A reader new to QoS can start at the beginning and build up to the design strategies and product specific sections. Those more experienced, can fast forward to the more advanced sections. The authors have done a tremendous job explaining the foundational architecture and concepts of QoS, and the flow and syntax of Cisco's Modular QoS Command-line (MQC).

The opening section, “Part 1: QoS Design Overview” (Chapter 1 – 9) layout the history of QoS, including the evolution of IETF RFCs, and the QoS implementation tools. The chapters build on each other, and do a great job of introducing a topic, then diving deeper into the details. Each of these chapters starts with a ‘Terminology’ section. This has the nice effect of clearly defining the chapters’ concepts.

The next section, “Part II: QoS Design Strategies” offers a discussion of business and application QoS requirements and thoroughly explores the overall design principles and implementation strategies. Applications covered include voice, broadcast video, multimedia conferencing, and mission-critical data applications. Within this section are my favorite nuggets… The design best practices and recommendations.

The remaining sections provide comprehensive design and configuration information on campus networks (Cisco Catalyst switches), traditional wireless networks, and new ‘Converged Access’ wired and wireless networks (Catalyst 3850, and Cisco 5760 WLC).

Of particular help to me was the Data Center QoS section. On the Cisco web site, Nexus QoS design and best practices information is lacking. This section fills this void and provides great information on the QoS hardware architectures and configuration. The covered platforms are Nexus 7000, 5500, 2000 and 1000v. Great stuff!

The final sections explore WAN, VPN and Branch QoS. I was pleasantly surprised with the inclusion of the Cisco ASR 1000, ASR 9000, and Cisco CSR.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone working with Cisco infrastructure. QoS is intimidating; however, this book is a tremendous resource that will ease your anxiety.

This book is kept in my cubicle and is already filled with highlights, notes in the margin, and many dog-eared pages.

The Best QoS Resource on the Market

End-to-End QoS is known as the "go-to" and "end-all-be-all" QoS book for Cisco network engineers. As an enterprise network engineer and CCIE candidate, this purchase was a no-brainer for me. However, I did not realize the extent that this book was written. The book begins with the basics and builds upon the foundation. Many different designs, standards, and scenarios are presented throughout the following chapters. The book then proceeds into platform specifics, including all IOS platforms, ASRs, CRS, wireless LAN controllers, and all Nexus platforms.

I would not waste my time with any other book. End to End QoS is the definitive resource for any network engineer- even those with minimal QoS experience. This purchase was well worth the money.

This book HAS ALL ACTUAL PLATFORM config and review of how to implement QoS from Modern G2 ISR up to SUP2T for Catalyst 6500/6800 series, and most impresive thing is the book covers nexus switches too!!

you MUST HAD and READ if you'll plan a CCIE or your work is beeing a network admin with a whole different platforms and equipment from cisco.

A MUST HAVE FOR THE VIKING HISTORY BUFF!

Njord Kane's "The Vikings - The Story of a People" is a must have for your personal library. As a student of history particularly military history much of my knowledge around Vikings or more correctly the "Norse" was focused around the Viking age or the age of raiding. Njord Kane takes it a step further and clearly provides a timeline of the Northern people from the Stone Age all the way to our favorite Viking raiders and the Christianization of their Kingdom. His in depth but easy to understand timeline is laid out perfectly and paints a picture of a culture that is much deeper, richer, and more complex than what you may know. Njord Kane also dispels many myths about Norse culture and lay describes many aspects of their lives in vivid detail. I particularly enjoyed some of his well researched and thought out hypothesis regarding myth and reality correlation.

Total rubbish

It's total rubbish not worth single penny! A dozen of pages with few questions that can be googled in seconds. The actual questions fill 60% of the kindle book leaving 40% of space for mambo-jumbo questions about attitude towards working over time etc. I did big mistake clicking the buy button... In short: stay away from this book unless you have too much money!

Gr 7 Up—Naofumi Iwatani is a geeky college student who is transported to a role playing game-inspired fantasy world where he discovers he is one of four legendary heroes. As the Shield Hero, having the least impressive weapon, he begins his adventure with a decided lack of popularity and is betrayed on the third day of his adventure. Left penniless, alone, and bitter, Naofumi must struggle to survive and has only his shield to help him save the world. This light novel originated as a web series, and the writing remains amateurish with a singular lack of proofreading. The dialogue is often unclear, especially when there are several characters speaking at once, and some characters never even get names but are simply referred to by their job titles, as though they really are nonplayer characters in a video game. The world-building and explanation of the story line are severely lacking, as well. The manga-style illustrations, in color and gray scale, are well done, however, and show a lot of action and emotion. VERDICT Because of the many typos and the questionably worded sentences, this confusing novel is not recommended. A much better choice for fans of this format would be Mamare Touno's Log Horizon (Yen, 2015).—Kelley Gile, Cheshire Public Library, CT

The hero we need, but not the hero we deserve.

Were you expecting another generic fantasy harem with the done-to-death "ordinary guy transferred to an alternate world" premise?
The "alternate world" part is true, but "generic fantasy harem", The Rising of The Shield Hero is anything but.
This is a story about how it feels to be an underdog who is ostracized by society, the subsequent distrust, anger and hatred towards said society, and how finding just one person who believes in you can change everything.

I'll admit, One Peace Books' synopsis makes it sound as if the word "generic" was invented for series like these; it simply does not do The Rising of The Shield Hero justice. The Rising of The Shield Hero is neither Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon , Sword Art Online , Accel World nor Log Horizon. You will neither find an obligatory harem, a stupidly dense/overpowered protagonist nor a godly tactician here (as of volume 1, anyway). Instead, you will find an averagely intelligent human being. He's also pretty pissed at everything, if i hadn't mentioned that.
So before you scream "generic", bear with me.

Naofumi Iwatani is a college student and one day, through means which are still a mystery, he was summoned to an unknown world. The first 6 chapters are relatively slow and uninteresting; they mainly serve to introduce the basic characters and setting for the story. Up to this point, there is really little to distinguish The Rising of The Shield Hero from its peers. However, chapter 7 is when those similarities come to a grinding halt. What really sets the story apart is its eerily human protagonist, unique plot progression and character development. Naofumi, who appears to be an uninspired goody-two-shoes, transforms into a walking mass of malice and anger. He despises the world which summons and grossly tramples upon him. Chewed up and spat out by the world, Naofumi is left with only his shield, his wits and his rage. The reader, to some degree, will sympathize with Naofumi: he has every right to be angry, to loathe the world after how it treated him. Note that Naofumi is by no means an incompetent idiot. He is much more intelligent than your average light novel protagonist; he quickly adapts to and exploits whatever the environment around him has to offer, in order to compensate for what he hugely lacks in strength.Throughout the story he can come across as morally ambiguous at best and morally defunct at worst; his actions do not agree with his words. One thing that is apparent though, is that no matter how much he wants everyone to drop dead, at the core of his being, Naofumi is still a good person. His character was executed in a such a way that even while blinded by hatred, traces of the former kind person he once was still shines through.

For the sake of not revealing too many elements of the story, Naofumi is all I can write about. The entire story is told through his cynical and bitter perspective; he is the highlight of the story for me. That is not to say though, that Naofumi is the only well-developed character, or that the rest of the story is non-existent. There are plenty of other characters with various pasts, motivations and personalities that are distinct from one another. I daresay its characters is this novel's strongest point: they are realistic and relatable. Readers will definitely find that some characters resemble those they already know or will know in life. The plot is not lacking either; it moves at a relatively fast pace, fast enough to keep you reading. There is also a fair amount of world building and action. If the first volume doesn't intrigue you with its world and story, it will make you sympathize deeply for its well-developed characters (especially the protagonist). However, I am aware that such a protagonist is not for everyone; I can imagine many being put off by Naofumi's pessimistic and scornful disposition. I'll also acknowledge that some plot points may make certain readers uncomfortable, due to the moral implications that they bring. Rest assured though, that many of these issues will iron themselves out by the end of the book; readers will find themselves sympathizing heavily with Naofumi, in spite of themselves. Volume 1 manages to wrap itself up with a heart-wrenching and satisfying climax: the kind where cascades of emotion come crashing down; the kind which resembles the vertical drop after a long ride up a roller coaster hill; the kind that haunts your mind and makes you want to go back and read it over a few more times just to soak up every last drop of emotion that oozes from each sentence. As a bonus there are two extra chapters at the end which provide greater insight into the personalities and backstories of two major characters of the story. One thing to keep in mind though, is that the author is an amateur. The Rising of The Shield Hero originated as a web novel, which the author updated with chapters every single day for the past few years until a publishing company picked it up. Therefore if the writing seems amateurish in this first volume, the author will most likely improve in the later volumes.

Complimenting the story are great illustrations and character designs. Even by light novel standards, the illustrations are very well done and impeccably depict various scenes. What I liked the most was how they perfectly captured Naofumi's facial expression: you can feel his anger seeping through every corner of his perpetual frown, through every nook and cranny of his dark, glaring eyes.

Now, onto the quality of the translation and publication itself. The book had 300 pages but each page was smaller and had less words than books by other light novel publishers. However, I researched and found that the original Japanese tankobon had the same page count, so I'll assume that One Peace Books' is not guilty of toning any printing quality down. There were some typos and questionably worded sentences I noticed throughout the book. Furthermore, dialogue can get confusing sometimes when there are three or more characters talking at once. Although I am disappointed to say that One Peace Books' translation is mediocre at best, it gets the story across. It wasn't anything bad enough to ruin my enjoyment of the story, although I really hope they step their translation game up in volume 2. However, as stated before, this was written by an amateur author so some kinks in the writing quality here and there might not entirely be One Peace Books' fault. On a side note, the quote at the start of this review is a direct quote from their translation which I particularly like.

I look forward to volume 2 of what seems to be a deeply promising series with a protagonist one just can't hate.

"4 stars for the story, not the execution."

First off, before you read anything else, this is the only English version of this book. If you want to read it, the issues I talk about are just things you're going to have to put up with.

I'm giving this 4 stars for the story, not the execution. The execution is horrible. What happens to the main character, how he deals with it, and his unique "dark" take on everything happening around him is what makes or breaks this story. Get past the main character's uniqueness, and everything else is about what readers of the genre (otaku gets thrown into a game/fantasy world) will expect. Aside from that, Aneko Yusagi has some very poor writing habits. Any time there is a detail that they feel the reader needs to know about, but which wasn't mentioned earlier, instead of editing things so that that information shows up where it should, the author just has Naofumi break into whatever else he was doing to say: " By the way, such and such means such and such" or "For your information, I did this other thing earlier." Another thing that really bugs me is that whenever anyone says anything are there ever any direct indicators as to who is saying what. There's no He said,"blah blah blah" or She asked,"What the blah?" You have to infer who is saying what every single time. This is manageable with two people or less, but becomes impossible in most instances where three or more people are talking.

Also, for some reason the publisher decided every instance of "Naofumi-san" needed to be changed to "Mr. Naofumi", even though the book is rife with Japanese-isms. Also typos. Plenty of them. A quick read-through by a fluent speaker before sending the book to the printers should have caught them. Guess they couldn't be bothered.

One of the greatest stories I have come across in a long, long time!

I have been following this series in Japanese for a while and I am thrilled that this series is finally making it to America. This is a terrifically written story that just keeps you wanting more. While a lot of people might think that this is just another run of the mill novel it is anything but that. The characters of Naofumi and Raphtalia are perfect for one another. I would write more but I just don't want to spoil it for anyone so all I will say is that if you pass this one up you are most definitely going to regret it. This is just one of those timeless treasures that only come around once in a great while so do yourselves a favor an pick up a copy.

About the Author
Jonathan M. Borkum earned his Ph.D. at the University of Maine, where he continues as a faculty associate in the Psychology Department and the Neurosciences Program. Since 1986, he has been part of the chronic pain program at MaineGeneral Medical Center, currently as a member of the Health Psych Maine group practice.

A Masterful Book by a Brilliant Scholar and Pain Management Expert

This book is written by a brilliant psychologist and scholar of headache literature, as well as pain literature in general, whose ability to synthesize research and to translate this knowledge into useful information is first rate. His integration and application of biopsychosocial information to headache treatment is state of the art, and obviously influenced by his experience and sensitivity to the needs of both practitioners and patients.

This is, by far, the most comprehensive text on chronic headaches. While other books on chronic headaches focus on migraines, Dr. Borkum's text stands out for its meticulous analysis and treatment of all types of headaches. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, this book covers biological, physiological and psychological causes and a holistic approach to treatment. Should be a standard for all students and practitioners working with chronic headache pain.

Good Basic translation for the Western mind.

As I greatly respect the Author, Swami Prabhavananda, of this Version, I do have to point out that it is a exoteric, orthodox,
and elementary interpretation of this fine Treatise.
The Charles Johnston 'Forgotten Books' Version of the Crest-Jewel of Wisdom is by far the most accurate and esoteric translation. That publisher's Type set and other changes as mentioned by them, do make it the best and most readable reprint available. Many of Sankara's other great writings are also included. You will not find them else where. "Viveka Chudamani".
The Original 1946 Theosphical University Press Covina version is a Great edition also, Most worthy of picking up a pristine copy.
The 1964 Watkins version is a complete rewrite;
where over 25 years after his first Version, he decided to rewrite under a different perspective.
Though worth having both... I would go with the first version if you desire a 'True Essence' translation. The Charles Johnston translations are simply the Only versions worth Reading.
