I purchased this book because it was required for my phlebomoty class but I actually liked it. I expected the usually confusing textbook written in "textbook" language but it was anything but that. It easy to understand, helpful illustrations and a lot of practice quizzes that were very useful.

This course is creative, fresh, fun and colourful, written in clear, step-by-step format, and a pleasure to learn Arabic through it.

The author is a Scholar of Arabic with MPhil and PhD degrees in Arabic Philology from the world-renowned University of al-Azhar (Cairo, Egypt), and also majored in English Literature and Language (University of Madras, India). He is an expert of foreign languages and speaks English fluently. His teaching and writing style is crisp and polished. The Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahim has taught Arabic to non-native speakers of it for more than 50 years. His Arabic language books and courses are used throughout the world in schools, colleges and universities. He is known for his knowledge, skills and success in teaching the Arabic Sciences. This is a great profile. Knowing it while learning, is very rewarding.

I recommended customers to buy the full series. A great ending!!

A great ending for the Made Man trilogy. This book had me hooked from the first paragraph to the last. A fantastic love story between Dante and Gia, with their wedding date finally upon them, Dante does what he has to do to keep Gia safe and protect the family. An enemy, who turns out to be a friend and I can honestly say that there was not a lull or boring part of this entire trilogy. Anyone looking for a darn good read that will keep your attention and make you rush to get the next book it is this one. This trilogy is flat out one of the best series I have read.

Engaging, Riveting, and action packed

Perfect ending to the trilogy. You have Love, Hate, Betrayal, and Jail, Weddings, Explosions and more Love in this fine book. Could not put down once started to read. While Gia's trying to plan their wedding, Dante's trying to secure his family's safety. After Dante's father's murder he has to send a message to the other family's that will stick and let them all know not to mess with him and his he loves. Best book of the series with ending to beat all endings.

The Boss of Bosses

This was a thrilling and exhilarating ride. The storyline is enthralling,mesmerizing and the decadence that accompanies ultimate power is seductive and luxurious. What amazes me is the writing it flows and makes you feeling as though you are in another place in time. Gave the Book 5 stars, the characters development through out the series is just outstanding. I thought the epilogue was so satisfying, it was beautiful how Dante care for and nurtured his relationship with Gia, that was what had me completely sold. Sex is great in a book but sometimes it just isn't the focus of a book and this just had me wanting to eighty six the mob. Gia Carlisi, has everything she has ever had, the love of the most powerful man in New York(although I always felt I was in Italy). After Papa's death and now she is next. Planning a wedding and trying to keep the Gambino family safe is priority one, but when the unthinkable happens the Boss has to make an EXAMPLE! He has no qualms about killing. Dante's on the warpath after she has be napped and she has just made nice with her abductor. Could someone be manipulating the chess board. He has his Angel and that is the only thing that matter, but after he lays down the hammer..the 5 families will know you can't control the BOSS OF BOSSES! LilIana Rhodes is a literary genius the book is sensational!

Western ideas about mental illness-from anorexia to post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, general anxiety and clinical depression-as well as Western treatments have been sweeping the globe with alarming speed, argues journalist Watters (Urban Tribes), and are doing far more damage than Big Macs and the Gap. In this well-traveled, deeply reported book, Watters takes readers from Hong Kong to Zanzibar, to Tsunami ravaged Sri Lanka, to illustrate how distinctly American psychological disorders have played in far-off locales, and how Western treatments, from experimental, unproven drugs to talk therapy, have clashed with local customs, understandings and religions. While the book emphasizes anthropological findings at the occasional expense of medical context, and at times skitters into a broad indictment of drug companies and Western science, Watters builds a powerful case. He argues convincingly that cultural differences belie any sort of western template for diagnosing and treating mental illness, and that the rapid spread of American culture threatens our very understanding of the human mind: "We should worry about the loss of diversity in the world's differing conceptions of treatments for mental illness in the same way we worry about the loss of biodiversity in nature."

During the last quarter-century, America’s cultural influence on foreign countries has become all too visible, with a McDonald’s opening on Tiananmen Square and remote African tribes sporting jeans and T-shirts. Perhaps less obvious, but no less worrisome, is the American exportation of mental illness documented in this unsettling expose by the coauthor of the recovered-memory critique, Making Monsters (1996). Watters emphasizes that different cultures have long had their idiosyncratic ways of handling stress that don’t necessarily conform to descriptions provided by the American Psychological Association (APA). Yet, because the APA’s treatment guidelines are increasingly being subscribed to and Western medicine’s recommended drugs prescribed by other countries’ health-care workers, such illnesses as anorexia and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are appearing in cultures previously unfamiliar with them. In making his case, Watters provides four carefully dissected case studies, those of anorexia in Hong Kong, PTSD in Sri Lanka, schizophrenia in Zanzibar, and depression in Japan. A successful virus is adaptive. It evolves as needed to survive and colonize new hosts. By this definition, contemporary American psychiatry is a very successful virus. Exploiting cracks that emerge in times of cultural transition, it exports DSM depression to Japan and posttraumatic stress disorder to Sri Lanka.

Journalist Ethan Watters masterfully evokes the heady admixture of moral certainty and profit motive that drives U.S. clinicians and pharmaceutical companies as they evangelically push Western psychiatry around the globe. On the ground in Sri Lanka following the tsunami, for example, hordes of Western counselors hit the ground running, aggressively competing for access to a native population "clearly in denial" about the extent of their trauma. Backing up the foot soldiers are corporations like Pfizer, eager to market the antidepressant Zoloft to a virgin population.

Watters has done his homework. Each of his four examples of DSM-style disorders being introduced around the world is rich in historical and cultural context. Despite their divergences, each successful expansion hinges on the mutual faith of both the colonizers and the colonized that Western approaches represent the pillar of scientific progress.

It is ironic that Americans are so smugly assured of the superiority of our cultural beliefs and practices, in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary. Do we really want others to emulate a country with skyrocketing levels of emotional distress, where jails and prisons are the primary sites of mental health care? Does our simplistic cultural metaphor of mental illness as a "chemical imbalance, " with human minds reduced to "a batter of chemicals we carry around in the mixing bowls of our skulls," represent true enlightenment?

Our implicit condescension is made explicit if we imagine the converse, one of Watters' interview subjects points out: "Imagine our reaction if Mozambicans flew over after 9/11 and began telling survivors that they needed to engage in a certain set of rituals in order to sever their relationships with their deceased family members. How would that sit with us?"

Not only is our missionary zeal condescending, it may be harmful. Watters provides evidence to suggest that the "hyperintrospective" and "hyperindividualist" model of Western psychiatry can be destabilizing to time-worn, tried-and-true indigenous healing practices, in some cases even producing the problems we naively believe we are combating.

"What is certain," Watters cautions in his conclusion, "is that in other places in the world, cultural conceptions of the mind remain more intertwined with a variety of religious and cultural beliefs as well as the ecological and social world. They have not yet separated the mind from the body, nor have they disconnected individual mental health from that of the group. With little appreciation of these differences, we continue our efforts to convince the rest of the world to think like us. Given the level of contentment and psychological health our cultural beliefs about the mind have brought us, perhaps it's time that we rethink our generosity."

Perhaps it is already too late to turn back the tide. Thanks to the exportation of Western diet and lifestyle, 19 out of 20 inhabitants of the tiny island of Nauru in the Pacific Islands are now obese. Previously hardy islanders are stroking out in their 20s and 30s. The globalization of the American psyche is more insidious, but perhaps in the end it will prove equally catastrophic.

Reading Crazy Like Us left me with a nightmare image of a homogeneous future world with McDonald's and Starbucks (see my review of Starbucked: A Double Tall Tale of Caffeine, Commerce, and Culture) on every corner, obesity gone wild, and Western psychiatry reigning supreme.

eye opening and heartbreaking

Four thoroughly reported chapters make a devastating case. Many well-meaning people (who for instance flew to Sri Lanka right after the tsunami to help) and some straight-up money-driven forces (big pharma) have really failed to try to understand non-western ways that cultures deal with serious mental illness. It's a hubris very much in line with our other exports -- "democracy" to the Middle East, say -- but one that you'd think would be a little less egregious because of all the scientists involved. Hopefully this book, which was a smooth yet very detailed read, will spark a long-overdue debate. As a psychologist in training, I'm glad I read this book.

Yikes-An Eye-Opening must read

Crazy Like Us- The Globalization of the American Psyche

This is a well researched , well written expose of the repercussions and folly of well intentioned and not so well intentioned (big pharma) in changing the world view of the rest of the world out of ignorance and for profit.
This is an eye opening call to attention, must read for anyone who is interested in meme theory, psychologists, psychiatrists and anyone interested in the wealth offered by other cultures. This is psychiatry and medicine gone very wrong.

Watters begins with anorexia in Hong Kong. There is a western educated psychiatrist who notices that anorexia in Hong Kong doesn't match the Western paradigm. He presents the idea that there may be no value in categorizing a disease by its manifestations when there are different origins. He quotes another author about glamorizing a disease as it causes imitation which is what starts to happen. The Hong Kong psychiatrist Lee notes" the only hope lies in deep understanding of each patient's subjective experience". Unfortunately, he feels that the rest of the world is being steamrolled by DSM.
Next example was the well-meaning do-gooders who brought PTSD to Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankans had coped well with adversity in the past. They understood things in terms of karma. They had their own ways of dealing with any aftermath. The Westerners came over with dubious therapies stomping on cultural sensitivities and most probably left Sri Lanka worse than it would have been. This chapter is particularly interesting in exploring the culture and beliefs of Sri Lankans.
Next is schizophrenia in Zanzibar and last and most frightening is depression in Japan which was literally a creation of big pharma.
The lessons of this book are profound not only in relation of the described events, but also how we can be manipulated by clever PR. Read it and shiver.

About the Author
Jeff Ditchfield is a successful author, outspoken campaigner, and activist. He was part of Bud Buddies, the organization that supplied cannabis free of charge to medical users from 2002 to 2007. He is internationally acclaimed and respected for his research on cannabis-based oils and preparations for medicinal use. Mel Thomas is a former commercial grower who now campaigns against cannabis prohibition and has written for Releaf, Weed World, Cannabis Culture and Grow Magazine as well as authoring the wildly successful grow book Cannabis Cultivation, which has been in print for 10 years. Between them, the authors have written four best-selling books on cannabis and are both involved with Bud Buddies II, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping and advising medical marijuana patients and cancer sufferers in particular. Learn to love your Cannabis beyond toking

Being a staunch Jeffersonian, I find it interesting that a pair of UK authors are quoting an American Revolutionary and placing it inside the front cover.

Such ideals of personal liberty balanced with social responsibility are foundations of marijuana legalization from the beginning. It is a travesty that it was and continues to be the country Jefferson helped found that has done the most damage to liberties in relation to the free use of Cannabis (as hemp or marijuana/sinsemilla).

The first three chapters of the book contain your usual context of history and usage of marijuana. Chapter four is where you get into the new and interesting content not outlined in all the other cannabis books out there.

Chapter Four: Cannabis Cures, is something new and lists conditions that medical marijuana can help or treat.

Chapter Five: Making Cannabis Oil, is also something new. Because Green Candy Press seems to be a more international company and much of the practices for making Cannabis Oil extracts are determined by what types of materials are available to you, this book talks about using Isopropyl and other solvents that are considered “unsafe”. Based on the science and the care taken for oil extractions, many solvents can be used if purged properly. This book gives you the boiling point for the types of solvent used around the world for this process.

I have found a friend that has used isopropyl 99.9% medical grade alcohol for making extractions and he has used 100 watt light bulbs to help evaporate the solvent. Based on the cheap and available medical grade isopropyl alcohol, it would be one of the cheapest and easiest ways to make extractions, and still be safe if proper precautions are taken.

Chapter Six: Hemp Nutrition and Health, provides the health benefits of hemp seeds as a food source and dietary supplement. Much of this is on the internet and any good researcher is going to be able to gain this same information, but having it compiled in an easily digestible form is a great way to ramp up your knowledge from a reliable source if this is a new area of cannabis knowledge for you.

Chapter Seven: Cannabis Kitchen, provides an excellent primer for extracting your own cannabis terpenes for edibles/ingestion. Some basic recipes for infusing into baking and cooking staples are all here.

Chapter Eight: Medicinal Cannabis Growing are some of the basics for understanding the botany of cannabis and how to create medical grade sinsemilla, but one chapter when there are entire books dedicated to the details of such does not give you enough to be successful with this book alone. It is an excellent primer for jumping off into any of the other books specific to cannabis botany and marijuana cultivation (including books by both authors of this book, Jeff Ditchfield and Mel Thomas).

All in all, all of the latest Green Candy Press releases have been hitting a particular sweet spot for me in their ability to provide excellent technical detail in an easily digestible format with great photography and step-by-step graphical instructions. The collaboration of Jeff Ditchfield and Mel Thomas on this book is a perfect example of this melding.

One other distinction this book will have is the fact that it has lack of advertising and product placement, as portrayed by other books similarly published by Quick American Publishing.

This has got to be the most ground breaking book written on Medical Cannabis and how to produce it. These authors have produced a very timely and much needed manual on how to treat yourself with medical cannabis, from how to grow, produce and administer the correct dose of cannabis oil required for many aliments, illnesses, diseases, and even every day aches and pains.

It is simply written with the every day person in mind, yet still conveys the professionalism that these authors have in the industry.

In short, this book is 'the' go to book on growing, producing and administering cannabis as medicine. Make it your first port of call.

Best Book on Medical Cannabis. Must have.

I have read many book on cannabis and medical cannabis, but this book is far the most in depth book.

Loved the illustrations, i have never used Cannabis and my knowledge was non existent. However we have learnt so much, from making oils to just raw juicing.

I have read about the author on google and hes helped so many in the UK where its illegal and been incarcerated for helping the sick and dying.

An excellent read and will be buying other books from the same authors. Buy it, Live Longer.

Unconventional narrative tells of a family tragedy..

This beautiful, yet haunting novel will linger in your mind long after the last page has been flipped. As shown from his previous novel, 'The Implacable Order of Things', Peixoto's narrative methods are very unique and unconventional. The telling of the story often alludes a dream sequence, as one is not listening to a story but rather floating upon series of event to feel the emotions that are all too human.

The book is loosely based on a historical figure named 'Francisco Lazaro' who ran a marathon in 1912 Stockhome Olympic and died during the race. It tells a story of two generations of a family, narrated by Francisco Lazaro while he is running the race and also by his father, who died in the beginning of the book. To sum it up briefly, the book is about what it means to live as a family. Everyone goes through bad times, with or because of other family members, but one is a family because they forgive unforgivables, and love unlovables.

The book seems a straight forward just another good story, but it's also very philosophical. (Just like his first English-translated novel) Following the impossibly beautiful prose carefully, one loses the sense of time, as if time is not linear but circular, and it comes as a big shock. This is a new kind of magical realism at its best.

Highly recommend to any readers who like to be reminded of why we read novels at first place.
