About the Author
Gavin Baddeley is a priest in the Church of Satan, and an experienced journalist who has worked for publications as diverse as 'The Observer' and 'Metal Hammer'. He regularly appears as an occult authority in television programmes for the likes of the BBC and Channel 4, and has featured in full page page profiles in newspapers such as 'The Independent' and 'The London Evening Standard'. He has been feted on the international lecture circuit, including an address on Satanism at Cambridge University. His previous 3 books received wide acclaim, 'Kerrang!' magazine dubbing Baddeley 'King Goth'.
Dani Filth is one of the most outspoken and controversial figures in the heavy rock world. His status as a pin-up among the Gothic fraternity, and talent for a provocative sound-bite have combined with Cradle of Filth's popularity to earn him countless front covers in both the worldwide rock media. The band has been the subject of features in influential journals, and appeared in numerous TV programmes, including being the subject of a BBC documentary. He has also starred in the cult British horror film Cradle of Fear, cementing the band's substantial crossover with horror fandom.

Controversy sometimes seems like the name of the game in modern music, and Cradle of Filth have certainly attracted far more than their share in the years since the band's formation in 1991. They found themselves in the thick of the violent controversy that engulfed the Satanic black metal subgenre in 1992-3, ultimately propelling it to the forefront of the metal world a decade later... ...Cradle of Filth, particularly as embodied by founder member Mr. Filth himself, have made a career out of breaking the rules and doing the unexpected. A leading band in a musical form best known for being perennially unfashionable on the one hand, and unacceptably offensive on the other, Cradle of Filth were profiled in a 2000 issue of the trendy style journal The Face, and collaborated with the BBC... ...If, as some purists maintain, being true to black metal is about being defiantly individualistic, and refusing to run with the pack, then none have followed that ethos more dogmatically than Cradle of Filth, even if they've long since outgrown the subgenre's musical boundaries... ...Dani has frequently stated that Cradle of Filth's favourite flaw is over-ambition, and this book aims to emulate that failing. In the pages that follow, we shall dig deep. Not just to the band's foundation, or even to the formative years of its founder, but back to the very roots of the ideas, events, and art that informed their inspiration. "The Gospel Of Filth" - an encyclopedia of all things filthy...

This book is beyond awesome if you are a fan of Cradle Of Filth. For fans, this is a must-have. Also, I think people who don't like the band but are interested in "goth" or "black metal" culture or the occult will like this book as well. The book references every influence behind Cradle Of Filth's albums, whether it is literature, film, or music. All topics are discussed fairly and in depth. The book is HUGE, with over 500 pages loaded with pictures and artwork. "The Gospel Of Filth" is written mainly by Gavin Baddeley, with some elements written by Dani Filth. Dani's contributions are available in side-boxes of text on about every other page. The book is about a foot tall, so the pictures look really good. Satanism is covered thoroughly, from the basic tenants to black magic theories and rites. Basically, "The Gospel Of Filth" will appeal to anyone interested in the Occult, heavy metal, and/or gothic lifestyles and rhetoric. Highly recommended. 5 Stars... Filthy...

So much more than just a Cradle biography

An absolute MUST OWN book for anyone interested in the occult, and even more so if you are Cradle of Filth fan. This book journeys through the history of the band while exploring the world of the occult and how it shaped the band. The chapters are the CD titles and within the chapter, we explore the darkness that influenced each. The book also explores the "black metal" and metal scenes at the time and delves into the influences of those other bands, both on Cradle and the metal genre itself. On top of that, this tome even explores the world of horror movies, books, TV shows, plays and more.
This book is crammed with tons and tons of pictures; every page has pictures, photos, drawings, etc. You won't get bored reading hundreds of pages of "stories from the bands past". That's not the format of this book, this book is a visual experience.
Unlike any other band biography, this book takes you into the dark underworld and shows you the bloody sinews that bound it to the music that Cradle was writing and recording. As you read the book, you will see the band grow and the world of the occult become more and more influential on the world.
There are the obligatory mentionings of Anton LaVey, Aleister Crowley, H.P. Lovecraft, Elizabeth Bathory, vampires, etc. There is more, though, much more. The book also mentions influences such as British poet Lord Byron and an exploration that early classical composers, rebelling against the tyranny of the church, wrote "devil music" to capture the cacophony of sound they wanted to express.
At over 500 pages, this book is well worth the read. Again, if you love Cradle of Filth, then this book will tell you more about who the band really is than any other source. If you don't really care for Cradle, but are into black metal, the occult, etc., then this book is still worth reading so you can experience the growth of the occult influence on pop culture.

A Must-Have for any Metal/Horror/Occult fan!

If you want a book that has it all with a ton of color pictures on EVERY page, flavored history of darkness and the occult, and just mesmerizing writing, then look no further. The Gospel of Filth is without a doubt the most interesting book on anything gothic/dark/scary/occult/artistic/musical out there. I've yet to see any book richer than this one in terms of occult history, the development of black metal (and many other different forms of metal), darkness, and decadence all in the same book. There are a plethora of pictures that have remained unpublished until this book surfaced, and there's literally eye candy on every single page. Order this now! You won't be disappointed! Even for those who think they know it all on the above mentioned topics, you'll learn a lot more than you bargained for.......And that's what makes a stellar book!
