Good in parts but heroine lacks some resolve

Sometimes heroine Kate acts quite admirably in The Secret She Can't Hide and other times, she is irrational and so impetuous a reader wonders if she can really learn from her mistakes.

Kate meets race car driver Cristiano Maresca and within twenty four hours is in bed with him. Cristiano is in a horrible car accident the next day and hospitalized. When the sweet Kate tries to visit she is turned away. Later Kate discovers she is pregnant and again tries to contact Cristiano. No reply is forthcoming from the ladies' man so she goes on with her life raising her son with no assistance from his father.

Later she feels the strong need to tell Cristiano about his son and she tracks him down to find an altered man. Cristiano is distant and he has no memory of Kate due to his brain injury in the car crash. He is desperate to regain missing parts of his life and he whisks a willing Kate to a secluded cabin believing she can help him fill in the gaps.

These two still have the hots for each other and they wind up in the same situation they found themselves in years earlier, in bed with no commitments. Kate doesn't really try very hard to tell Cristiano about their son and when she must return to her son she still leaves without saying a word. This is where Kate is emotional and reckless, falling back into the same predicament with Cristiano.

Cristiano does find out about his son and he is admirable in that he never questions the paternity but takes to his son right away and his feelings are reciprocated in his son. Kate still cannot figure out where her feelings lie when it comes to Cristiano.

I found Kate to be at times reasonable and she is admirable in that she wants her son to know his father so she puts aside her own fears initially. But she loses some of her strength when Cristiano enters the picture. Then she is self-motivated and overly protective. This tale has some pizzazz but I wished Kate had some fortitude when it came to dealing with Cristiano.

Good writing and story but with parts lacking sense.

This review contains some spoilers, do not read if you don't want to know certain plot lines!

Kate Edwards had a one night affair with Formula One race driver, Cristiano Maresca, four years ago when she interviewed him for a sponsor company. The affair resulted in a pregnancy and a son but Cristiano had no idea of the child or any recollections of Kate due to amnesia induced by a racing crash the morning after their affair. The story takes place four year after the crash and Kate came upon a chance to meet and maybe tell Cristiano about their son. Cristiano recovered from the crash but lost memory of the 24 hour time period before the race which happened to span his whole involvement with Kate. Cristiano met Kate at a promotional party celebrating his re-entrance into the racing world after the crash and he was instantly drawn to her even without remembering who she was. He spirited her away to a chalet in the mountain hopefully to help him remember the missing 24 hours. I was pretty satisfied and intrigued with the story up until this point. Once they reached the chalet instead of doing some serious talking about their past connections they chose to spark the memory with physical connections and sex. They didn't do much other than having sex for two whole days there, in the meantime she was testing him to see if he was worthy of getting to know the existence of their son. There were some missed opportunities for good conversations, he didn't even ask too many questions about her but was hoping sex will help him remember and when he does he will leave her and go back to his old life. He was attracted to her but didn't care to find out why they have such a connection that Kate gave him her virginity. He was too busy wallowing in his own pity most of the time.

Here are a couple parts of the story that just doesn't make sense. When he finds out that Kate has a son back home it didn't even come up to him that there is a possibility that he may be his son. Given that he has no recollection of the time after he slept with Kate he wouldn't know whether she was pregnant by him or not, wouldn't he at least be curious and ask her if that could be his son? Kate prepared a letter for Cristiano in case she didn't have the courage or chance to tell him about his son but she knows from their one night affair that he is dyslexic and can't read so why would she write him a letter? Also, I am sort of tired of the ever accepting and welcoming children in the HP world. Every kid seemed to accept and love their missing or absent parent(s) instantly upon reunion. My experience with kids in the REAL world is that they are usually a little reluctant or sometimes even downright hostile toward strangers and it takes both time and patience to gain their trust. I guess page limits and limited space makes for some allowance in Romancelandia.

All in all it is an okay read, mostly due to Ms. Grey's capable writing but not as emotional as it should be. The ending was pretty romantic and nicely done though, it could have been an ending from a romance movie. The four or five love scenes were kind of short and choppy rather than the usual two or three detailed ones (but more emotionally satisfying)from other authors. I did like that the Hero was a race driver, I was getting bored with all the billionaire tycoons and sheikhs.

4 out of 5 stars!! This fast-paced, drama-filled, roller coaster of a novel was one I didn't want to put down!! I loved how this story flows from the scenes surrounding Cristiano's crash to Kate and Cristiano's reunion to how they try to work it all out in the end it was just great. Kate is a bundle of nerves that life just keeps proving to her that she should worry about the things she does. Cristiano believes that he needs to prove himself to everyone no matter the cost. Somehow, they just seem to work together.

I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys reading stories about racecar drivers and/or anyone who just enjoys romance novels!

Systemic fragility is rooted in 9 key empirical trends: slowing real investment; a drift toward deflation; money, credit and liquidity explosion; rising levels of global debt; a shift to speculative financial investing; the restructuring of financial markets to reward capital incomes; the restricting of labor markets to lower wage incomes; the failure of Central Bank monetary policies; and the ineffectiveness of fiscal policies. It results from financial, consumer, and government balance sheet fragilities exacerbating each other -- creating a massive centripetal force disaggregating and tearing apart the whole, untameable by either fiscal or monetary means. This book clarifies how the price system in general, and financial asset prices in particular, transform into fundamentally destabilizing forces under conditions of systemic fragility. It explains why the global system has in recent decades become dependent upon, and even addicted to, massive liquidity injections, and how fiscal policies have been counterproductive, exacerbating fragility and instability. Policymakers’ failure to come to grips with how fundamental changes in the structure of the 21st century global capitalist economy—in particular in financial and labor market structures—make the global economy more systemically fragile can only propel it toward deeper instability and crises.

This is a great book and the substantial effort it takes to read it is well worth it. It is both a compelling economic history and a call for change.
For decades, the neo cons have used every possible economic club to beat the lower 90%: low growth, no growth; stagnating incomes; busted unions; no benefits, no pensions; cash starved public schools, cities, counties, and states; shipping all the real jobs overseas-------what remains here are part time, contingent, low paid service jobs. The young are saddled with a trillion dollars of student loans which won’t be paid off until old age, if then. Budget busting deficit spending to fund wars and destroy social security and medicare and force austerity. Ruthless regressive taxation and an upside down economy that shoots all new income growth straight up into the pockets of the top 5%.
When the global economy collapsed in 2007 through 2009, Bernake and other bankers “helicoptered” trillions of free dollars into the banks and other major corporations but this monetary policy has gone nowhere to revive the real economy. The economic destruction of the lower 90% has set up negative feedbacks and what is called monetary policy [pumping trillions into banks and other corporate entities] doesn’t provide real jobs or income growth. Rasmus calls these negative feedback systems systemic fragility. But what monetary policy has provided is trillions of dollars of free money for the banks and others to speculate in an obscene array of financial assets. Hence Bernake and other banlers have never stopped pumping more and more trillions into the global economy and the result is what Rasmus calls a “money parade” of a hundred trillion dollars that is turning casino capitalism into a world wide web of defacto Ponzi schemes. Rasmus does describe the necessary tools to bring back a real economy of real jobs and real income growth for all but the lower 90% are so beaten, atomized, and misled that a global explosion on the level of the 1930's Great Depression is almost inevitable.

After reading this book one can surely say it will not be Medicare or Social Security which will bankrupt this country, it will be the trillions dollars of debt in the shadow banking system which will crash worldwide bond markets which include US Treasuries.

Finally a microbiology textbook for a biology major that is written in a fresh new way!

I am using this textbook in my majors microbiology course this semester. It is an amazing book that has all the details that I need for my students but is not written in a dry manner. It uses the pedagogy that is so commonly found in non-majors books to help the student majoring in biology / microbiology see the connections between topics, the research behind the science, and applications to their life in the real world. The artwork is amazing and helps the students better visualize the structures and functions they need to learn. The WileyPlus homework that is associated with the textbook is a great way to help students practice what they are learning in class and be better prepared for exams. I am so happy that this book came to market as there was not much of a choice out there for a quality major microbiology textbook. All the other major microbiology textbooks follow the same theme of too much information in too much detail with very little real life application and connections. Finally, we have a microbiology textbook written by someone that not only understands the research behind the content, but can teach it as well!

The book is as described and there is nothing wrong with the book. I purchased this for a class that I am taking, and all the information in the book is wonderful. It is not too detailed though so I would only recommend this textbook for people taking introduction to microbiology courses.

About the Author
Reuel B. Parker has spent a lifetime building, repairing, restoring, designing, and cruising in sail- and powerboats. Author of "The New Cold-Molded Boatbuilding" (International Marine, 1990) and of numerous articles for "WoodenBoat" and "Boatbuilder" magazines, he has been a devotee of sharpies since his childhood on the shores of Long Island Sound. He is currently putting the finishing touches on a 60-foot Virginia pilot schooner; he plans to move his design business aboard and go cruising.

Excellent technical information.
Well illustrated with photographs and drawings.
Analytical in organization, construction topics with invaluable index.
Directed at a slightly larger construction than average.
Terminology only slightly salty, but a good sailing vocabulary (or dictionary) will help.

The idea of cold-molding a boat (using thinner woods laminated with epoxy or polyester and a glass or synthetic cloth) has intrigued me for more than 30 years now. A lot has changed for the better in that time.

The method allows someone with average woodworking skills and a nominal disdain for the dangers of chemical coatings to create a boat that can provide generations of pleasure without the continuing demands a wooden boat makes on time and wallet. This is not to say that such cold molded boats are maintenance free, nor inexpensive however!

While much of Mr. Parker's book is related to the construction of a large (44 feet) boat, the information is invaluable regardless of boat size. It seems likely he would recommend something a bit smaller for your first attempt, but I got the feeling (I'm fighting the urge still) that even I could build that cruiser and head for the Caribbean.

The technical information alone, replete with careful practical and experiential considerations, makes the volume well worth adding to your bookshelf if you are planning on making, rather than buying, a boat, or if you just enjoy the pleasures of fleshing out your dreams with a significant bit of knowledge and an understanding of craftsmanship.

If you are serious about wooden boats, whether to dream of or build, I would put this on the shelf together with titles by John Gardner, Samuel Devlin, Iain Oughtred and John Brooks & Ruth Ann Hill.

I'm a 66 y.o. retiree, working solo, in my second year of building a 34' schooner. I've never built a boat. There is only good news: it's a step-by-step process, the steps are small but many, the harder ones will yield to thinking. DO IT! - you won't regret it. Mr. Parker's book is invaluable, and densely packed with good advice on every page. Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding also highly recommended (for attitude adjustment), and the west system/Gougeon brothers' one also. A sailboat may be the most beautiful object that ordinary men have ever achieved. Or extraordinary ones, for that matter. Good luck! The big Festool "Rotex" sander, a makita battery-powered impact driver, epoxy and a bosch power hand planer will be your friends for life - money well spent.

Great story!

Diana Blayne, AKA Diana Palmer does it again! I've read many of the books she's written as Diana Palmer and I wasn't disappointed by this one.
The back cover reads: "The Bahamas--a gentle, exotic world of white sand, turquoise water, and golden sun. She had come to relax, to forget her grief--the flash flood that had ravashed her world, savagely destroying the most precious part of her past. And the island was working its magic. A man who attracted and repelled, teased and tormented, until she was caught, trapped, drowning in a raging torrent of chuming emotions and irresistible desire."
I believe Ms. Palmer's style is a constant. Her stories have the trademark story lines... the older man and the younger innocent female.
Although I was hesitant to try her work as Diana Blayne, I now can say that it was a good move. If you like Diana Palmer's style of writing, you will love her work as Diana Blayne as well.
