Veitch and Kennedy's Classic Afterlife War Story Resonates Now More Than Ever

A haunting rumination on the horrors of war from the perspective of those who have the most to lose, this reissue of the original Epic Comics limited series remains a poignant reminder that even at its darkest, lowest ebb, the human spirit can always find a way to cling to hope.

In some ways, I guess I've been waiting to review this otherworldly war saga by Tom Veitch ("Star Wars: Dark Empire," "Animal Man") and Cam Kennedy ("2000 AD," "Star Wars: Dark Empire") ever since it first came out under the aegis of Marvel's critically acclaimed Epic Comics imprint in 1988.

This is a work that's stayed with me for over two decades. The list of books that have managed to have that kind of lasting impact on me is dreadfully short. At the time, there wasn't really anything else like "The Light and Darkness War" on the shelves (in North America, at least), and I was immediately entranced by its lurid depiction of a brutal never-ending conflict at the edge of forever.

On the surface, the exploits of Vietnam vet Lazarus Jones and his comrades in the Light Gang comprise a gut-wrenching, action-packed war story full of bombast and bravado. Truth be told, there aren't any wallflowers in the Light Gang. Engle, Huff, Slaw, and Jones are true warriors, forged in the steamy jungles of Southeast Asia, fighting a war nobody wanted them to win.

When their Huey is shot down outside Da Nang in 1969, the entire chopper crew, with the exception of Lazarus, transmigrate to an alternate universe collectively dreamt into being by generations of human warriors as a kind of intergalactic Valhalla eternally desperate for new recruits.

This central conceit — that the afterlife is a Jungian jumble of interconnected pocket universes — serves as the foundation for Veitch and Kennedy's extensive world-building, informing and driving the events of the series.

Plagued by a war of attrition lasting over ten thousand years, the Light Galaxy doesn't simply serve as a new battlefield for Earth's combat dead. It's also home to countless indigenous races, including the Menteps, who act as living engines for the distinctive, rugged stone ships that are the primary war machines for the forces of Light.

Each issue of the series opens with an excerpt from the Mentep holy book, serving to frame the narrative and add yet another layer of depth to an already richly textured fictional world. It is this level of thought and detail that sets "The Light and Darkness War" apart from the books of the day and still pushes it head and shoulders above much of its competition today.

For a teenaged comic book fan brought up on a steady diet of Marvel and DC, a work of this sophistication and craft was a revelation. Initially drawn into the series by Kennedy's innovative layouts, gruff and gritty rendering, and luminous color palette, it wasn't until many years later that I could truly appreciate Veitch's contribution to the book's development.

Don't get me wrong. I knew what good comics writing was even back then. I just didn't have the critical tools or the maturity to truly appreciate the craft and passion poured into the creation of this harrowing, existential war story.

Drawing on a background in underground comix, beat poetry, and activism, Veitch constructed the mechanics of "The Light and Darkness War" around his own ever-evolving personal beliefs and a desperate need to come to terms with a morally questionable war that had decimated a generation of Americans physically and spiritually.

Written at a time when Vietnam vets were still marginalized and vilified as “babykillers”, Veitch created a world tailor-made to celebrate their bravery and unique skillsets, even if — especially if — they were drawn from a conflict they didn't necessarily believe in.

Veitch goes into more detail about his motivations in the new collected edition's back matter, but if it seems counter-intuitive for a war protester to create a work that celebrates armed combat, then you're missing the point.

"The Light and Darkness War" is not a story about guns, bombs, and the horror of conflicts we barely understand. It's a story about how we treat one another after all the fighting and killing is done.

DNS Error or Server Not Found

Alexander Galloway seems to have something profound to say about networks but not the confidence to say it clearly. Galloway sets out to prove that "protocol" is to distributed postmodern networks (i.e. the Internet) what Foucault's "panopticon" was to modernist social hierarchies. Since Foucault is, for me, the best example of why postmodern 'theory' is still worth taking seriously, I got pretty excited about this book.

Galloway begins ambitiously, clearly stating his thesis (the book's subtitle), identifying his intellectual opponents (naive techno-libertarians), and situating his work within the literature (he invokes figures as diverse as Vannevar Bush and Gilles Deleuze). By page 65, the book seems really to be going somewhere, as Galloway walks us through the history of protocol, using TCP/IP and DNS as exemplars. The writing is technically crisp and hard-headed.

But just as I started to get really interested, Galloway seemed to back off his argument, retreating into vague pronouns and undefined terms. Derrida appeared briefly. There was some general derision of 'late capitalism.' I finally got lost on his discussion of Sergei Eisenstein's attempt to adapt Das Kapital for the movie screen ("What does this have to do with networks?" I thought.)

In the end, I never figured out what Galloway meant by "protocological control." It was not clear which (if any) agent does the controlling, what the limits of protocological control are, or how we could exercise control if we wanted to. I was left with the distinct impression that protocological control amounts to the simple requirement that nodes on a network speak a common language. It's hard to see this as particularly insidious, or even politically relevant. There may be more going on here, but I can't find it.

A must-have if you're interested in the art, tech, or culture of networks

Galloway is a triple threat: he's fluent in the esoteric dialects of poststructuralist theory, Internet geekspeak, and network aesthetics. There are plenty of books that try to tackle the art and politics of the Internet age from one of these angles, and a handful that try two--but if you're looking for a three-dimensional treatment of the subject, this is the book for you.

Protocol's subtitle, How Control Exists after Decentralization, gives away Galloway's intention in writing this book, which is to steer a path between the "media are chains" intonations of broadcast media critics and the "networks make us free" hype of Internet evangelists. The fact that he's trying to erect a new theory in this uncharted territory makes this book a valuable contribution to the field.

Sometimes I think he loses his path along the way, as when he veers afield from his focus on networks to apply his ideas to an abstract "biopolitics" or to propose an aesthetic interpretation of Marx. None of these efforts is misguided or irrelevant, and academics with heads in the clouds will probably love these parts. Personally, however, I find Protocol most useful not when it connects one theory to another, but when it connects a theory to a specific technical specification. When Galloway pulls A Thousand Plateaus of the shelf to reveal the politics underlying the Internet's fundamental TCP/IP protocols, he's not just showing off his booklearning--he's upgrading Deleuze and Guattari's theory for use in the field, so we can apply their radical philosophy to the email and chat applications we design and deploy.

If you're a teacher trying to explain the relevance of dead European philosophers to students who'd rather be learning the latest PhotoShop filter or IM client, Protocol is a great translator between these realms. In my classes, I make them read an excerpt on a specific topic--network diagrams, for instance--but I also ask them to analyze the handy tables and photographs Galloway uses to condense and illustrate his points.

This is an excellent book. I am a huge fan of income producing products and I've subscribed to Richard Lehman's newsletter on that subject since 2003 with very gratifying results. Mr. Stooker's book is a welcome addition to a very narrow field. He writes clearly and extensively on a complex subject and I am researching some very solid possibilities as a result of "Income Investing Secrets". The language can be a little casual but is always relevant and does not detract. Most importantly, a beginner could easily develop a very gratifying income producing strategy from this experience. His specific recommendations towards the end are also very solid but you still need to do your own research. He would provide a great service to his readers through a financial blog following and updating his strategies and recommendations. As Rod Stewart said: "the wisdom of a lifetime no one can ever tell" but Mr. Stooker comes very close. Enjoy and profit!

Relief in a confusing investment world

Whew! Someone has finally explained what's most reliable and what's not in today's apparently-volatile investment world. Even better, this book explains it all using broad, easy-to-understand concepts and everyday language.

I used to invest regularly. Oh, it wasn't very much, so I didn't lose sleep over financial headlines during the past couple of years. Frankly, I'm not even an armchair stockbroker; I simply chose companies I liked to feel a connection to.

However, I did step on the brakes when several banks and investment firms folded. I was unwilling to risk money that might otherwise be spent on something more entertaining... and reliable.

This book restored my understanding -- and confidence -- in investments. Before I recognized the differences between trading and investing... well, I lumped the entire realm of stocks, bonds, etc., into one large, liability-fraught category.

Now, I have a far better understanding of what's safe, what's foolish, and the most solid approach to long-term investments.

The "ah-HA!" moments throughout this book will provide relief for anyone who -- in the past -- handed money to a broker or investment firm and crossed their fingers.

They say that knowledge is power. Well, this book definitely provides the knowledge that will empower any investor (small or large) to make better decisions in a changing marketplace.

If you're a current investor, or someone who'd like to invest but the economy makes you nervous, this is definitely the book to read.

This is a must read (and I don't say that lightly)

I like reading business and investment books, but this one blows them all out of the water!
It's not that other books aren't good. Some even very good. But this one is so in-depth, it weighs all the pros and cons of each investment vehicle, it quotes a lot of research and proves what works and what doesn't. And it does it all in a way that anyone can understand.

It's also geared toward something we should all think about - the long term.

I'm so impressed with this book, that I'm going to buy several for my immediate family so we can all share in these investment secrets.

I'm going to keep a sharp lookout for all of Richard Stooker's books from now on.
