Philip Kotler is S. C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He received his master’s degree at the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. at M.I.T., both in economics. Dr. Kotler is author of Marketing Management (Pearson), now in its fifteenth edition and the most widely used marketing textbook in graduate schools of business worldwide. He has authored dozens of other successful books and has written more than 50 books and 150 articles in leading journals. He is the only three-time winner of the coveted Alpha Kappa Psi award for the best annual article in the Journal of Marketing.

And in a recent Financial Times poll of 1,000 senior executives across the world, Professor Kotler was ranked as the fourth “most influential business writer/guru” of the twenty-first century.

Dr. Kotler has served as chairman of the College on Marketing of the Institute of Management Sciences, a director of the American Marketing Association, and a trustee of the Marketing Science Institute. He has consulted with many major U.S. and international companies in the areas of marketing strategy and planning, marketing organization, and international marketing. Really interesting read

I have to say, I'm pretty surprised by the 3 star reviews here. This is one of the best textbooks I've ever had to deal with. The book does not seem too fact-heavy at all; it moves through the chapters at an almost conversational pace. It is very well written and pretty entertaining in my opinion. I would open this book to do the assigned reading and find myself reading a segment completely unrelated to the assignment because I was genuinely interested in what it was saying.

This book also seems very up-to-date. I was surprised by some of the examples the book references because it feels as if they'd only happened yesterday.

I suppose this review doesn't really matter because if this is the book your professor chose, you don't really have the luxury of choice. So I guess I'll just end on the note that I really enjoyed this book, and I think that you will, too.

I brought the book college so it's not like I bought it for enjoyment. As far as the material in the book, it seems pretty straightforward which is always a plus especially, when some textbooks feel like you're trying to decode world secrets (didn't find it super interesting lol)

A must-read account of national health reform

Inside National Health Reform offers an uncommon combination of both the political process and policy substance of the Affordable Care Act. From his unique perspective, John McDonough provides a first-hand, thoughtful account of the politics surrounding health reform, and supplies the context for how our health care system, and its many problems, came to be. Further, McDonough's thorough and balanced description of the provisions included in the ACA go far to educate readers on the substance and potential implications of the new law, written in both an entertaining and accessible way. The book revives much-needed optimism about the future of our health care system at a time when we are too quick to forget the historic accomplish and sweeping benefits the ACA.

Best Resource Yet For Understanding Health Reform Law

McDonough describes the process of enacting the ACA and its contents. For those who are interested in political processes and how congress works, the first section is a great resource. For instance, the book describes a process known as a 'Byrd Bath' that budgetary reconciliation bills must go through to be eligible for passage. McDonough also writes about the many different interest groups that were either for or against health reform in whole or in part or even for and against it at different times.

McDonough logically splits the second section into 10 chapters, one for each title of the ACA. Each chapter contains a summary of the corresponding title as well as a discussion of the arguments for and against the measures in the corresponding title. To me, this was the most valuable element of the book.

This book is most valuable because there is no other resource out there that is as complete, accessible and thorough as this one. That said, McDonough does have a bias--which he admits to in his preface--in favor of the law. Whether good or bad, the law should stand on its true contents and merits, not the party of the president who signed it. This book goes a long way towards educating the reader about the substantive promise and shortcomings of the ACA.

McDonough makes the case that the ACA is as big and important as Social Security in 1935 or Medicare in 1965, for better or worse. The success or failure of the ACA is yet to be seen as so many of its programs--guaranteed issue for all adults, the individual mandate, quality and safety programs, fraud and abuse measures, insurance subsidies, Medicare rate cuts and much more--have yet to take effect. In the meantime, this book is the best way to understand the contents of the ACA, in McDonough's words, '...whether one regards the law as monumentally good or monumentally bad.' (p. xiii)

Enjoyable, Essential Account of Health Reform

This weekend I went out and bought a copy of John McDonough's new book. I would have paid less if I had ordered it on-line from Amazon. My wife couldn't believe that I would find a book on national health reform to be enjoyable reading, but it is--and incredibly informative, too, even for someone who was close to the process. It's nice to be able to look back at what happened and see all the individual events in the larger context. McDonough also provides accessible summaries of each of the major portions of the health reform law.

Schlegel fully understands and explains Shakespeare's works exceptionally. I found the essay on Macbeth to be thourough and helpful. Like A.C. Bradley he makes points that are well supported by the play and provides unique perspectives.

Cordaella's Journey Begins

Cordaella Buchanan lost her mother when she was an infant. She was raised by her father, a Falconer. It was only the two of them on Ben Nevis. She loved her father who taught her so much, but her life changed in an instant. Her father was murdered and she is taken in by her Uncle. Can she exist in this house where she is a pawn? Her Uncle's only focus is money and power and she is only a tool for him to use. This is what life is for a woman. Cordaella is a powerful character. I like her intelligence and her understanding of the machinations of the Earl. How difficult it is for her to live in a household where she is not loved. I could understand her heartache and I felt her hurt. Liz Lyles created a character that I cared about. I felt a connection and wanted to be with Cordy on her life's journey. This first installment drew me in and kept me reading. I want to know where life and fate will take this strong woman. The Falconer's Daughter showed how powerful role fate plays in life and takes away our control.

Beautifully written and compelling

The Falconer's Daughter Book One is compelling reading as it tells the story of Cordaella Buchanan.
Set in the Middle Ages,the book begins in a simple cottage on Ben Nevis in Scotland before moving to the lush countryside of Derbyshire. There are contrasts aplenty. Life on Ben Nevis is harsh yet while she lives there Cordy is loved and cherished. In her uncle's castle near Buxton there is material wealth but love is thin on the ground.
Liz Lyles writes beautifully and has created a plot which kept me reading late into the night. I am now heading straight fro Book Two to continue this wonderful story and I can't wait!

An intriguing tale of a young girl who loses everything she has known and is forced into a new life.

Cordaella Buchanan didn't know any other life than one of she had. Raised by her father, they didn't have much. Her father worked hard so they could survive until the day he was murdered.

After her father’s death, Cordaella is forced to leave her Highland home and taken to England to live with an uncle and his family. She didn't know any of them. She was taught many things including how to be a proper lady. She also learns she is the heir to a large fortune. Because of her inheritance, she is prepped for marriage where everyone has something to gain except for Cordaella

When Cordaella overhears conversation between her uncle and a peasant the truth comes out about her father’s death. How will Cordelia handle this? Revenge is the first thing that comes to mind.

This is a very interesting story. I was hooked right away. I'm ready to read the next book now.

Awful , poorly designed and cumbersome book

I have studied Mucha for over 40 years. This is without a doubt the very most user unfriendly catalog I have ever seen. The images in this heavy (5 lbs!) tome are printed in lurid colors,(some almost "day-Glow") and a chopped up format that destroys any understanding of Mucha's works. The designers of the book seem to have thought that they were being clever by using overlapping illustrations, so that there is no artwork that is presented in a simple full images. The essays are written in dated academic double talk, and it is filled with errors and with repetitions of long ago disproved information. The book was published for the magnificent exhibition in Vienna last year. The exhibition was profoundly beautiful and overwhelming. I was very put off by this catalog,and only bought it to obtain the scant few unknown images to add to my collection. I challenge anyone to use this book for a few minutes without becoming uncomfortable..the weight alone makes using it a sheer torture .(This applies to the paperback edition as well) Robert H.

The Rest Of The Story

Alphonse Mucha is one of the most loved artists of the last hundred years for good reason. He was a complete master of graphic design, his posters and period advertisements are now synonymous with the Art Nouveau movement. The graceful line, and elegant arrangement of shapes and colors compel art lovers even more now, than they did his intended audience, through their continual reproduction and publication.

This book really features an artist less known and appreciated. While it includes a generous selection of posters, book illustrations and related designs, the true focus of this volume is the work he did in the years after the peak of Art Nouveau, when he embarked on a vastly ambitious cycle of works relating the history of the Slav people. For these works were monumental in scale as well as conception, and he spent the decades after his Paris fame engaged in their creation.

Here we have Mucha as a painter and muralist, the power of his design skills are put to a different purpose than the promotion of events and products. The illustrations in this book are excellent, and short of a visit to the Czech Republic, are the best look most of us will have of the encyclopedic depiction of figures and landscapes that comprise the Epic. It is a grand vision, one that is often tragic portrayed here, yet as beautiful in its way as the familiar Sarah Bernhardt posters. There is a new, subtle and melancholy use of color in the murals and tonality often replaces the linear crispness of his graphic style. These works may not be as accessible to some, but have a rich and solemn genius.

This volume does not gloss over the earlier works by any means, his jewelry, photography and other less known illustrations are here too. If you are only interested in the Paris period of his work, this might not be the best single book for you, others cover that in great detail. For an overview of his entire output, however, this is a very valuable resource, lavishly and lovingly produced, it makes a great addition to the library of any art lover.

I would like to give this book an unbiased rating, but this whole star system makes it impossible. What I expect/want from a Mucha book is just personal preference, but this book was not spectacular nor is it terrible.

For the first 1/5th of the book, it was a very lengthy biography. Whether it is accurate or interesting, I can't say because I didn't read it myself since I checked this out from the library before toying with the idea of buying the book. There were about three to six images to accompany the text, but the sizes range from 2 x 3inches to 3 x 4inches, which is not very big, considering how I like to see the image in full detail. For 1/8th of the book, it shows the popular prints/posters Mucha is known for, the majority of them covering the entire page. A few images are accompanied with sketches/studies (some I've never seen before) Mucha did before producing the final product while others have paragraphs of background information.

About 1/5th of the book has his oil paintings, many of which I have never seen before, most which do not have the typical style Mucha is known for (abstract organic lines, incorporation of nature, pastels... just think of his poster works). It also has background information and sketches/studies like the popular pieces section I mentioned earlier. The rest of the book has an even amount of images in regards to his photography, sketches, and non 2D related mediums. In the back is a listing of the images shown through out the book, with the the title, size, medium, date, so on and so forth, then there are about 6 pages of thumbnails not shown in the book with their descriptions. They're so tiny (about 2 x 1.5 inches big) you can't see any of the detail. I guess if you want to say that you've seen it and acknowledge its existence, it could be useful, but other than that, I don't know why you would even bother.

So, in summary, this is a very image heavy book, and show cases a portfolio with a variety of mediums Mucha mastered in. If you're looking for a book with novel Mucha pieces, this book is it! But if you're looking for iconic Mucha pieces, look elsewhere.

Dr. Philip Tate earned B.S. degrees in both mathematics and zoology and an M.S. in ecology from San Diego State University. He earned his doctorate in biological education from Idaho State University. Phil has taught anatomy and physiology to all levels of students: nursing and allied health, physical education, and biology majors.

Small pictures

I disliked this digital copy. It was not formatted for a kindle, so you were constantly having to zoom in and out in order to read and find the information necessary. With so many pictures, it's extremely difficult in class to utilize this version and keep up. Had I known, I would have purchased the hardback copy.

Good textbook, great pictures and diagrams

This textbook does not try to impress you with being overly wordy. For most things it is very straight to the point and has wonderful diagrams that make it easy to learn from. If you're a broke college student like me, the previous edition is essentially the same and is much, much cheaper - you'd be looking at under ten including shipping. I have looked at both the editions side by side and there are very few changes, however the page numbers are off by just a few - new edition a diagram may be on Pp. 87 where the old one it may be Pp. 84. All in all this is a great textbook and I prefer it much over many other A&P books I've used previously.

I actually found this book easy to read. It has been 5 years since I attended a college class. Definitely never took any science classes like A&P. I found this book pretty easy to read and understand. I would recommend it.

About the Author
Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D., is an award-winning psychology instructor at Stanford University, and a lecturer and program developer at the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education. At last - a really helpful self-help book for me

I'm one of those people who hate the self-help movement but can't stop hoping that the next book is actually going to make a difference, that it's the one that going to make me stop procrastinating and deal with my bad habits. So, I keep on reading books and blogs, only to be disappointed.

Not so with this book.

While the book offers the regular mix of science, personal experiences and tips, it's more down-to-earth than other books I have read. Maybe that's because it's based on a course that actually dealt with people going through the motions described in this book.

Usually, I read a book, highlight what I think makes sense and move on without incorporating what I just noted. In this case, I'm remembering on a daily basis what the author wrote and implementing her suggestions. It might actually be the last self-help book I ever read.

Putting down the book presented a willpower challenge

Speaking of willpower, once I started reading this book, it took every ounce of my willpower to put it down! (And, so yeah, I may have been spotted reading this book in my car while while sitting at red lights. My apologies to the drivers behind me for any [slight] delays my willpower challenges may have caused.)

As the above evidence suggests, I can't rave enough about this book. It's a gem, it's a god-send, and it's just that good. You'll have to read for yourself to see what all this gushing is about, but for now, here's a small sampling in the form of the titles' chapters with the author Kelly's big idea summary of each:

***Chapter 1: I Will, I Won't, I Want--What Willpower Is, and Why It Matters
Willpower is actually three powers--I will, I won't, and I want--that help us to be a better version of ourselves.

***Chapter 2: The Willpower Instinct--Your Body Was Born to Resist Cheesecake
Willpower is a biological instinct, like stress, that evolved to help protect ourselves from ourselves.

***Chapter 3: Too Tired to Resist--Why Self-Control Is Like a Muscle
Self-control is like a muscle. It gets tired from use, but regular exercise makes it stronger.

***Chapter 4: License to Sin--Why Being Good Gives Us Permission to Be Bad
When we turn willpower challenges into measures of moral worth, being good gives us permission to be bad. For better self-control, forget virtue, and focus on goals and values.

Our brains mistake the promise of reward for a guarantee of happiness, so we chase satisfaction from things that do not deliver.

Feeling bad leads to giving in, and dropping guilt makes you stronger.

***Chapter 7: Putting the Future on Sale--The Economics of Instant Gratification
Our inability to see the future clearly leads us into temptation and procrastination.

***Chapter 8: Infected!---Why Willpower is Contagious
Self-control is influenced by social proof, making both willpower and temptation contagious.

***Chapter 9: Don't Read This Chapter--The Limits of "I Won't" Power
Trying to suppress thoughts, emotions, and cravings backfires and makes you feel more likely to think, feel, or do the thing you most want to avoid.

***Chapter 10: Final Thoughts
If there is a secret for greater self-control, the science points to one thing: the power of paying attention...Self-awareness is the one "self" you can always count on to help you do what is difficult, and what matters most.

Needless to say, I was enthralled and captivated throughout this book. Kelly's down-to-earth delivery of the essential insights of psychology, biology, neuroscience, and economics is beyond out-of-this-world. But, she doesn't just share the findings; she provides ways for you to see and do for yourself. Sprinkled throughout her discussions are "Under the Microscope" and "Willpower Experiment" features of this book which provide many personalized opportunities for gaining self-awareness and experimenting with new strategies to help you address your own willpower challenges--be it over-eating, over-drinking, over-spending, over-thinking, over-indulging, over-Facebooking, under-doing, or perhaps even over-reading at red lights.

In the introduction, Kelly shares her hopes that: "If this book did nothing else but help you see that common humanity of your willpower struggles, I would be happy. But I hope that it will do far more, and that the strategies in this book will empower you to make real and lasting changes in your life....By the time you finish this book, you'll have greater insight into your challenges and a new set of self-control strategies to support you."

And, indeed she delivers on that hope. Reading this book provides the insight you need to understand--and more importantly, have compassion for--your personal challenges, along with the techniques, tools, and perspective makeovers you need to gain more of that seemingly elusive self-control. Now, how can you resist that?

not a bad book

The book, using an assortment of studies from psychology and neuroscience, makes a case for strengthening pause-and-plan which enhances willpower to help modulate one's impulses. Unlike many self-help books, the author does focus on lessons gleaned from meaningful studies (she calls it "science-help") and, as such, the message conveyed is overall sound.

Two remarks:

1. The book's writing could be improved. It also follows a self-help formulaic messaging format. She gave a lecture at Google (also on youtube) where she makes an effective case.

2. The part where this book is weak: how to improve willpower in the long run. The author goes through a laundry list that includes slow breathing, meditation, exercise, getting sufficient sleep, relaxing, etc.

Many of the studies she mentions are interesting, but of mixed value as the behavior modification results are related to the short-term, at the time scale of months. Meaningful changes are measured in years. Dieters know this very well. And the long-term failure rate high.

Bottom line: what the author recommends -- being more aware of one's impulsive tendencies and training oneself to be less susceptible -- is well-intentioned and useful. However, it is the difficulty implementing them in daily life, under real-life conditions, in the long run, that is the vexing problem. And on this front, the book falls short.
